Hey girls,

I'm feeling very emotional today so be kind lol

Having a bit of a problem with my chosen name. We have gone through countless countless name lists and only one name stuck out for us that we instantly fell inlove with.

Problem : I'm English, I live in Germany and for the foreseeable future our son will be attending German schools and the like. We have a problem with pronounciation. I posted this on a German forum and got kind of attacked (hense the emotional state of mind lol) for 'inflicting' such a name on my unborn child.

Ok so I wasn't going to say anything but here goes. My chosen name for baby is Levi (Pro: LEE vie (rhymes with tie) ) The German's pronounce the name LAY weee. I really want the name pronounced the way I intend it to be. I get called pretensious for wanting this. I don't want my son to hate me when he's older because no one can pronounce his name. I absolutely adore it though, it's the only one that feels right. Coincidently my german husband adores it too but he's never really been someone to follow the crowd anyway.

We aren't a conventional family, we like unusual, we don't like to have commonly used names. Levi fits best for us, it's not common but it's not obscure enough to be deemed far out there sigh.

So.. after that long windedness.. what would you do if you were me..?

i think its lovely and you should defo go with it if you and ur husband are happy with it, who cares what anyone else thinks, its your baby!

Definitely call your baby waht you want and if anyone mispronounces it just tell them!!!

If you both like it then Id use it (I like Levi ). You will just have to correct people when they get it wrong, I always have to do this with my daughters name, her name is Shani (pronounced Shaynee), but a lot of people pronounce it Sharnee :nope:. xx

I love Levi for a boy!

im sorry if I offend anyone, but why should you get stick because THEY cant pronounce the name as its meant to be said?! Thats crazy...when he introduces himself as Lee-Vi then his friends, teachers and people around him will know how to pronounce it....and I dont think you should be made to feel like a bad person for giving your little boy a name you love!!

Its very narrow-minded of the people you speak of on whatever forum you are talking about and they should pronounce it properly without moaning...I would be shocked if an English spoken person moaned and called a German person cruel for pronouncing their name wrong?!

If you like it then definitley use it!
I think it's a lovely name.
xxx

I think it's a cute name -- different without being crazy/weird

I live in the US -- and know one baby boy named Levi

You should name your baby any name you love -- but just be aware that if he is in german schools & if the german pronounciation is different, then he/you will prob have to correct people frequently...

I've always liked the name Levi.
If you like it then I think go for it x

will u be living in germany for the forseeable future? ie all his school years??

he may struggle at first to get ppl to know how to say his name but if hes gonna b with the same group of friends throughout school he''ll do just fine

dont change what u want to suit other people!

Thanks very much guys, I feel much better today =)

My husband has reassured me that school for baby is going to be fine. Apparently there's a few foreign pronounciations of names in the schools around here and everything is great for them so I feel relieved now!

Sticking to my guns, gonna keep my chosen name :D It's not like Levi is an unheard of name here, it's just that they pronounce it differently.

x

I asked my german friend about this, he said to explain that v is pronounced german w to them. He said he couldn't pronounce English w anyway until he came over here and married a Willow!xx

there are lots of names that need explained :) like siobhan (pronouced shevaun). I know a girl at school name spelt eithne, pronounced enya, and she just corrected everyone once and that was that

Use it! Just keep correcting people, it would be sooo rude for them not to make the effort!
