Hi,

I am super anxious about having my catheter inserted because my hospital doesn't put them in after the epidural. It is procedure there to put it in during your 2 hr prep before surgery. For my own comfort I really want it put in after unless medically necessary prior to surgery? My 1st emergency section is was put in 1st I understand this as you need to move very fast to get baby out...that being said it burned and pinched terribly and I was extremely uncomfortable until my epidural took effect! So if I can bypass that I certainly would have a more positive experience.

I've been offered lidocaine numbing gel to be applied before it is put in. Anyone have there's put in first with the numbing gel? Did it really help or make things more bearable? Did you have yours put in after the epidural, I'm curious how many hospitals have this doing it before procedure!

I had two C sections and both of my catheters were put in after my epidurals. I've not heard of putting them in before, but it might vary on where you live. Hope you get some more responses.

I am freaking about this too. I am going to ask my Dr when they pleace it at my next appointment. I am also very prone to bladder infections so that concerns me too.

I don't actually know with my first when I had my catheter as it was all a bit of an emergency blur. But I've got my pre op on Friday and will def be asking to have it put in after my spinal.

I finally have gotten somewhere with the hospital I'm having my section at and it's all thanks to the hospital patient representative! My hospital has no policy about it being done before head Mat nurse just said it's always been done that way but admitted majority of hospitals do it after for patient comfort...patient rep and maternity head both agreed its time to have a policy/procedure in place for this issue so moms won't have to worry about their comfort. So it's written on my file to put in after I've been advised by hospital to refuse the procedure if they don't comply with my request and the nurses on my prep will be written up why they didn't follow the special request.
Always speak up if your unsure or uncomfortable about what is being done to your body! I'm very glad I pursued this and feel so much better knowing I won't be uncomfortable before my section:)

Good for you, standing up for yourself! Just had my 3rd section 5 months ago and there is no need to make mothers feel that! I requested to have mine after spinal too.

Very happy for you. My own hospital told me they always do it after the epidural to save us that extra discomfort. It's a really quick procedure, even with me who has a very small urethra apparently. Lol. As for taking it out, that wasn't painful so that was fine. Never had one put in before but I don't like anything hurting :haha:

I had mine inserted prior to my spinal with my daughter, didn't even feel it. Honestly don't worry about :)

My 1st c-section was an emergency so they put the catheter in before the epidural and it really wasn't that bad. My 2 other sections they put it in after the epidural, I just hate when they take it out.

Why the hell would they do it before hand? It sounds totally bizarre to me. I had an emergency c-section and they put it in after the epidural. The whole point of hospitals & the medical profession is to make people comfortable & well!

I had a spinal and my catheter was put in after the spinal. I don't really see a reason to do it before and I am so glad you spoke up were able to be put at ease.

Good for you for speaking up! I had two and the catheter was put in after my spinal each time. How strange for them to not do it the other way.

I have a SEVERE bladder condition (Interstitial Cystitis) and they dont hurt me, Just uncomfortable....You will be FINE!!

I had mine put in two days before my section as I was on strict bed rest and I really worried about it hurting, but it didn't. I didn't really feel it while it was in either and I ended up with it in for three days total. If it hurt that bad going in I would probably say the person doing it wasn't doing it right because honestly it was nothing. I'm glad you got them to listen to you though and they are putting it in after the spinal.
