UTI and preterm labor?

Has anyone ever heard of a UTI causing preterm labor, or have you experienced it?

I went into the ER last night with nausea, body aches, and a killer sore throat and found out I have both tonsillitis and a UTI. I was prescribed amoxicillin and started it last night. The sore throat is now gone. The UTI, on the other hand, is wreaking havoc.

100.8 fever, severe full body aches, and if I stand up, cramping in my bladder area, pain in my back, what feels like contractions, a heavy pressure feeling, chills/shivering. The labor-like feelings went away completely when I laid down so I didn't mention them when I called the ER about 30 minutes ago. I did mention the fever, aches, and chills and was told the antibiotic doesn't kick in until 47-72 hours after the first dose. It's been 24, so they said the infection is probably still in full force. The weird thing is that I have no pain when urinating, but anyway... Taken tylenol (paracetamol) and just waiting for the fever to come down.

Just wondering about the preterm labor part.

I have read and been told premature labor can be caused by a UTI. I hope it clears up soon. :hugs:

I had a cervical infection, maybe it was technically bacterial vaginosis or something like that but I had contractions that were very painful (I was only about 26 weeks or so) one evening and when I saw the doc the next day he said 'pains can be normal' until he did the PAP we had already had scheduled and saw all the goo in there. Then he told me that those types of infections can cause premature labor and stressed to importance of antibiotics which I am normally very hesitant to take.

When I was 6 months pregnant I had a fever of 39.4, chills, terrible backache and many of the symptoms you described. They said my urine was messy and put me on ampicillin and then amoxicillin (or the other way around) but nothing was working and I was put into an early labour ward. I spent 5 days in hospital, not getting better, until my cultures came back for e.coli. I had a kidney infection which is why I had no pain in my bladder (which they kept asking me).

As soon as they found out I had e.coli (not the evil kind we hear about in the news, but the regular kind that we all have in our GI tract that is responsible for many UTI's) they put me on Keflex (cyclosporin) and I started feeling better within hours and was discharged 24 hours later.

They were worried about preterm labour because the infection can spread. I wouldn't wait too long if your fever increases, the Tylenol helped bring mine down but there's only so much you can take. Take care & good luck and keep an eye on your fever x

TicToc: I am also hesitant to take antibiotics, but I'd do anything for Little Man, so I'm sucking it up and swallowing these horrid pills :(

ocean_dew: Wow, that could be my story. Thank you so much for sharing. As my fever persists for over 24 hours now, sepsis/kidney infect is my first thought. I had a culture done at the ER and at 24 hours nothing was growing even though the UTI showed leukocytes and red blood cells. Still waiting for the 48 hour culture results and may have to go into the hospital for an IV if the bug is something nasty that neither amoxi or keflex can kill. My OB did mention that some test they did showed gram-positive bacteria so she is happy with the two meds I am now on (Amoxicillin and Keflex). I have to say that based on prior UTIs I've had, I usually had relief within 24 hours of starting antibiotics so I'm quite alarmed that things have been getting only worse.

Last night my fever was 101.6 and it took Tylenol almost 3 hours to bring it down. I spiked this same fever again in the middle of the night and ended up awake for three hours shivering in a huddled mound on the couch, with body aches and a feeling like my eye sockets were boiling. It took yet another 2-3 hours for the Tylenol to kick in. Saw my OB this morning and she said it could take the Keflex 48 hours to work and I've only been on that one for about 21 hours. Still, I'd have expected things to be IMPROVING by now (at least with the amoxicillin), but they are worse than when I went into the ER. OB didn't seem concerned. She thought I was given the right antibiotics and that it's just a waiting game for them to kick in :(

Also, taking tylenol scares the poop out of me. I used to go to bars/drink quite a lot 4-5 years ago and had many bad episodes where I passed out, etc. I know my liver is likely permanently damaged from my stupid days, and taking something as potentially dangerous to the liver as Tylenol makes me want to take the minimum dose, as infrequently as possible :(

I totally know where you're coming from. I hate taking any type of drug and there I was being given all kinds while pregnant :dohh: The chills and shakes were crazy too, they were exhausting! I was also huddled up on the couch and in the hospital I wore a winter hat, lol. I really hope they have/ get you on the right antibiotics and things clear up soon.

have u been drinking cranberry juice hun also tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz glass of water put honey in if its hard to drink will help clear the infection up as well.

feel better xxoo

I have just had a uti diagnosed but an asymptomatic one. They have put me on some meds aa I have had a history of no symptom uti turning into kidney infections. I hate taking drugs normally but the last thing I want is this little man arriving way to early

I've been there a few weeks back, I had no idea I had a UTI but ended up in labour triage ward with symptoms of pre-term labour which was when they found it! They did say it causes those symptoms and I think it took 48 hours ish to start to feel some relief. Truthfully I felt rubbish for around 4-5 days, longer than usual when I get infections, but I guess your body has more things on the go so maybe that's why it takes longer? I had lots of baths for the cramps and stuff which made me feel a little better. Hopefully you start feeling better soon!

Kay_baby and feathers: I also had no idea I had a UTI. I went into the hospital for throat pain to find out I had tonsillitis. They just happened to test my urine, only because I'm pregnant, and found the UTI. I also have a history of UTIs turning into sepsis, so we got on this one right away with amoxicillin and when it seemed the amoxi wasn't working they started me on Keflex.

The great news is that my fever broke last night, so the antibiotics finally kicked in. I spiked a 102.2 fever and then started sweating profusely, which was a sure sign that things had changed. When I woke up this morning, the fever was totally gone! I feel way better. Wish I didn't have to continue on the antibiotics, but alas I must.

i had a UTI a couple of weeks ago and i took the antibiotics. I have heard that a UTI can cause premature labor but i had mine for over a week before i realized and im fine, babies still kicking around in there :) you should be fine

UTI's do end up causing pre term labor if left untreated. Some infections are quicker then others. Im glad you and your baby get the help you needed and are fine now :)
