I've been feeling so frustrated lately and I just need to vent!

I live in an apartment building and the apartment above us decided to do some renovating. Which means they start banging and drilling from 8 in the morning, stop a little in the afternoon and then start again in the evening till about 8....

My baby goes to bed at about 10. And she likes to sleep till 9 (waking up 2-3 times to feed and then back to sleep again). So they wake her up at 8, thus she loses an hour of sleep and then they don't let her nap till 3 in the afternoon... That means that for at least 5 hours she cannot sleep...

When it's finally time for her nap, she is so overtired that she only sleeps for an hour and then wakes up screaming.

When it's time for her next nap I put her down, she sleeps for a little while and then they start banging again... Then she can't sleep till bedtime!!!

This is driving me nuts! I can't do anything about it cause of stupid laws about noise and hours... I take her for a walk sometimes so she can fall asleep, but these days it's way to hot for her out there so she can't fall asleep in the pram anyway!

I just feel like there's nothing I can do and that my baby is being tortured by this... :nope: :help:

EDIT:

I am also afraid that this will screw up her whole sleep routine I had going for her... She was doing so well too!!! :sad2:

Can you speak to them and try to arrange some quiet times. Ask them if they could please leave noisy work till 9am and agree a mid day nap time. As your neighbours hopefully they'll want to work with you to encourage good relationships after the work is finished.

I completely feel your pain! We have rude upstairs neighbors that have no concept of the amount of noise that they make during my baby's nap-times. Is there any way that you can invest in a white noise machine or use a white noise app? It may help to drown out the noise.

I agree with previous pp's. Try talking to them and see what they say, maybe also try finding out how long these renovations will take? Just so you know what you are up against. Also I second the white noise. I got one of those fans that you put on the ground, and it made a lot of noise and would help a lot. Of course if they are using hammers and stuff like that I don't think that any amount of white noise would help with that. :-( But I'd still try <3

I've talked to them but all they say is that it's not quiet hours so they can do whatever they want. They just don't care!

Also I do have white noise in her room anyway, it helped her from when she was a newborn to sleep, but it doesn't drown out the noise. It's just too loud! :(

Wow :-( were you at least able to find out until when these renovations will continue? I am so sad for you :-(

I have gone through something similar, only they started at 7 am and stopped at 7 pm. Every.single.day. My child was around 7 months then, but still, it was horrible.

We eventually moved, because it was more than just a simple renovation, they bought all the houses and appartments there, and decided to 'extend' the hotel. So 'our yard' is where 5 or more men were, so we had no privacy anymore, which obviously is not allowed, and there was dust and such everywhere and we suffer from asthma. Eventually nothing we did helped, so we moved.

I am afraid that you can only wait it out :-( it seems. It sucks that they are being so unreasonable :-(

Yeah it's bad... They don't know when they are going to be finished as they work as long as they have money. They might stop for a few days and start again.. it's torture!

This is awful! Does baby sleep in the car? the stroller? the sling? You can do that for a nap or 2 just to prevent over-tiredness/as a survival technique until the nightmare is over. Is there anyone you can stay with or "house sit" for during the day?

There are actually daytime noise bylaws, a police officer once told me that when I was dealing with neighbours from hell. I would look up daytime construction bylaw, and make sure what they are doing is allowed. The daytime noise bylaw is a higher decibel than night obviously, but there is still a limit!

I used to live in a condo where my upstairs neighbours were pure hell. They just partied and blasted music and had fights. The girl even harassed us. No amount of police calling helped. Luckily we were renting so we moved. IM sorry, that really sucks. :(
