My son is 4 weeks old but was born at 36+5 weighing 5lb 7oz so a tad early and small. Now 4 days past his EDD.

He is on Aptamil 1 (this is what they have in hosp as I planned on using Aptiimil) and has been fine until the past 4 days or so. He is now suffering from really bad gas - I mean really bad screams the house down literally, bright red until he passes it and then is instantly fine. He seems to be passing gas all day long tho, literally every half hour or hour or so and wakes him in his sleep etc. He is really suffering in pain and I am unsure what to do.

He is a good burper, winds very well, and am assuming his digestive system is a little young so was thinking about switching to Aptamil Comfort.

Just to add he has also been a tad constipated, going daily (which also makes him scream the house down) but very firm so I gave him cooled boiled water which seems to have sorted this issue out. I use NUK bottles and have tried Dentinox as I used this with son 1 but it didn't really help. TBH I don't think its a colic top end wind issue but a digestive issue but I may be wrong. Def a bottom end issue!

Any help/suggestions ladies?

**edit should also mention he's not a vomitter, have no issues with formula staying down so don't think he's intolerant to it or anything like that.

Rubbing his tummy, bicycling his legs, warm baths, changing positions etc etc do help move the wind out but is also quite good at doing this himself voluntarily! lol its just stopping him getting it so bad thats is causes so much pain.

My LO wasn't a preemie but was also small at 5lb 2oz. She suffered with constipation & wind as soon as i stopped expressing.she was on sma gold i changed her to Aptamil Comfort and she started pooing again! The relief was amazing. She does however still suffer with wind at night time sometimes (even at 14 months old!) but Aptamil Comfort has definitely been helpful for her.i used to find massaging her tummy helped.

My baby is 3 weeks old and I also was using aptamil, however he's been gassy right from word go! Exactly how you described screaming all night and also he's been constipated or juust not opening his bowels very often. I switched to hipp organic yesterday as I've heard a lot of people rave about it. and have seen an amazing improvement. He no longer cries uunless he's hungry, he passes gas without pain and he started pooing reguularly! I'm not sure if you've considered changing formula, and I know every baby iss different but just thought I'd share my experience. Oh and its cheaper too :)

we switched to Aptimil Comfort and it stopped Poppy screaming after a feed within 1 day :D
she still takes friggin ages to burp tho, but i think thats just her, nothing to do with the formula :D

def worth trying it hun
xx

Thanks ladies for your help gonna try comfort, give it chance and then if not helping will look at HIPP.

I second Dimple. Whatever they've done to aptamil has made it awful. We switched to hipp on Saturday. Like Dimple the change has been great, we get periods of ds awake without screaming. He's still windy but he's coping far better with it.

I hate to say it but time is a healer...

my little girl was 3 weeks early and we have had a NIGHTMARE with her with wind etc (she also has a milk allergy and acid reflux) but the wind has been such an issue, she has literally screamed all day long until a few weeks ago. Something I would like to recommend you (and anyone else sho has a baby that suffers) try is baby stomach tea, This the one I have - (https://www.immergruen.co.uk/Baby-Stomach-Ease(1397985).htm) we started on it a couple of weeks ago and it is when Jess got so much more settled, it might be a coincidence but I really do think that it has helped her. She does still get trapped wind dont get me wrong it isnt a miracle cure but she is sooooo much better now. She has always been able to bring wind up really well during and after feeds, but just constantly has wind all day long bless her. Nothing helped her, cycling legs, baby massage, warm baths, being kept upright and not laying down we tried EVERYTHING. The baby tea is the only thing I think has had some effect...

I managed to get this at my local health food shop. Basically it is a blend of herbal tea with fennel (the main ingredient to help the tummy) and aniseed, camomile and caraway. You can also buy online, at a fiver a pack it is definitely worth a try in my opinion, I just give this to her as often as I can, before feeds, after feeds, inbetween feeds.

Be great to hear if you do try it if it makes any difference to your LO.

And lastly, I know it is hard work for you also having to see her like this, and I guess you are also get stressed out with it, I know I have been - but it will pass, i know i ahted hearing it and didnt believe it but you just have to bear with it unfortunately, just hoping we are on the right tracks now at nearly 5 months...let us know ow you get on.

I just think they weren't cooked for long enough and their poor little systems didn't get a chance to mature as they should have done so are pretty behind in the development of them

Massive hugs to you and if you want to chat just PM me, I have been exactly where you are so know how hard it is.

(sorry for the long post, I seem to have rambled on somewhat!!)

Also just wanted to add to my last post that the baby tea is a natural remedy of just herbs so nothing there to upset bubba or worry about giving them. Very safe and can be used from 2weeks old

Me again!! Just thought do you use a probiotic? If not might be a good idea to get one as this can also help...

I switched to parents choice formula from Walmart and my boy has less gas.
