I was just wondering whether anyone knew if there's any difference between giving Vitamin K by injection or orally?

Obviously I want to do whatever is best for baby, but I'm not sure of the differences  keep meaning to ask my midwife but always end up having a long list of other things to ask and forget! x

hi there i have just been reading a thread in pregnancy club about the exact same think and from what many of the ladies are saying is that the oral version ( given in three doses ) doesnt really get assorbed into the system that well x and that the injection is a better way of having this vitiman x please reseach the reasons for giving vit k to your baby as in some cases it is not needed x x

My MW said babies don't take it orally very well because they tend to spit it out. Definately ask your MW soon as you can to weigh up the pro's and con's - and stay away from Google! x

Thanks both :) definitely wanted to stay away from Google, but I assumed oral wouldn't go down too well with a newborn. Will definitely ask MW on Wednesday x

ive not even thought about the vitamin k thing lol. what are the benifits? i've learnt to stay away from google about things like this lol xx

I chose the injection as my MW said babies tend to spit it out if they have it by mouth the injection is much simpilar and my LO didn't even wimper whilst she had it done x

I was planning on giving her the injection, it seemed like most people do it by injection when they mentioned it at our classes.
But I don't think there's much difference to either?

xxx

I'm goin for the injection it seems simpler and I'd prefer to know he's definatey had itrther than worry about him spitting it out.

Injection is just a more certain way to make sure they get the right amount I think. Like the girls are saying, they could spit it out if done orally, and it has to be administered more than once, rather than just the one injection. Robyn had it by injection and it was fine.

Thanks everyone :)
It's so much easier being able to talk to people that are going through/been through it on here :) going to talk to MW at my appt tomorrow & make sure I've covered everything but you've all been a huge help x

Charlotte had hers by injection, she didnt even notice it!

Apparantly its not the first oral dose that the hardest, its the later ones as the stuff is very bitter and the baby just spits it out

i would prefer her to have the injection:)x

i chose the injection because its more effective and also although she cried it was a one off thing whereas with it orally they have to have it a few times and i thought that would be distressing (ella was on oral antibiotics and she got so distressed everytime i had to give it to her)
