Washing nappies etc prior to first use

Thanks I will give that a go. Also I think I will cut down my detergent use after reading that, I use no where near the recommended dose of detergent even on a wash of clothes and 1/4 on a wash of nappies. Even then it is probably closer to 3 teaspoons full.

It took me 18 months to get it right for my machine! I'd worry more about using too much than too little. If you don't use enough it will be obvious as soon as you take them out of the machine as they won't look or smell clean, but build up is sneaky and might not become obvious until it's causing problems. So if in doubt, be cautious and use a teeny teeny bit

It works for me. I have a fairly new machine so it's efficient with water. I use Persil non-bio, plus some water softener because we're in a hard water area. I use the same detergent at my mum's where it's soft water, just without the water softener.

I've bought nappy sanitiser too, not sure if I end up using it. You know, newbie enthusiasm over-stocking etc...

If you do use sanitiser, I'd count it as detergent so don't use a full dose of that and detergent as well.

Okay, right. So half a teaspoon of each. I think I will be using the sanitiser sparingly anyway.
