washing new nappies to build up absorbance (sp)

do i put them in my normal wash, several times or do i soak them for a number of hours?

the most economical way to do it is to take all the inserts and soak them for 12-24 hours and then put all the inserts and outers in the machine and either do a wash with a teeny bit of detergent or just a rinse, dry and use
I have taken to soaking new stuff for 24 hours unless its microfibre in which case I wash once then use.
