Oliver is weighed every 2 weeks and puts on 13-16oz a fortnight however he was weighed today and has only put on 6.5 oz in 2 weeks. Is that normal?

Oliver is breastfed apart from every evening around 11 I wake him for a feed and he has 4-6 oz of aptimal formula depending on how hungry he is. He has been getting very green stools for weeks now, I keep mentioning it to the HV and she said it was the formula causing it; i was using sma gold but changed to aptimal 3 weeks ago. Since changing the formula i have told her the stools are the same and all she has said is she doesnt know whats causing it. could this be anything to do with the slower weight gain?

Thanks x

I was always under the impression that green stools were totally normal with formula, I know Aisling had them when we used to do formula top ups...

I think all babies gain weight at their own rate and the 6-7oz average weekly gain is just that, an average. They say that babies at Oliver's age should be weighed once a month, otherwise can cause us to be more anxious on their weekly gain. We had a 2 week period when Aisling only gained 1oz but the next week she gained 12oz so who knows. I wouldn't worry too much, especially if the HV is also happy :hugs:

Green poo can mean an imbalance of fore and hind milk. Do you make sure he drains each breast properly?

He used to feed for 20 mins min before emptying the breast then I would change sides but lately after less than 10 mins he gets really fussy and often crys until I change sides, I do check and only a tiny bit of milk comes out so I thought he was just getting for efficient at feeding and emptying the breast quicker. I saw the dr this afternoon on HV advice and I have to take in a stool sample just to make sure theres nothing wrong.

My baby had the green poo very early on when she wasn't getting enough milk. Then she was only taking foremilk for ages as her suck was inefficient.

You could try breast compressions when feedin him to encourage the hind milk hun xxx

May sound like a very daft question what do you mean by breast compressions? x

You might not be draining the breast properly in 10 mins. If he fusses for the other side you could try the football hold so he thinks he's on the other side but he's still on the first breast IYKWIM?
:)

Havent managed to get online the last few days. Spoke to the HV again and she said lots of babies go off the breast at this age but would get a breastfeeding counciler to call me. Oliver hasnt had green poo since Friday now yippeee!!! but has been getting more fussy the last few days; I really dont know whether its because he's not getting enough, its flowing too slow or whether he's just fussy cause he's teething. Its really been stressing me out ot be honest! I dont want to give up breastfeeding yet but my OH and I think its prob best to start weaning Ollie off the breat and onto bottle cos its becoming too stressful. I will really miss it though, I love nursing him :(

Tried changing to football position but he was still being fussy, HV said that babies at his age sometimes go off the breast it may be because he has a bottle every evening at 11 so he may be getting lazy. Sometimes he feeds well but not all the time, ive been so puzzled by it tbh, thinking is it wind, teeth hurting, not as hungry as I thought, very hungry??!!! been really frustrating so think its prob best to wean to bottles although I did want to breast feed Ollie till 6 mths x

Ellis's weight gain really slowed about 12 weeks from 8oz a week down to 2/3oz and one spectacularly depressing week to 1/2 oz, nobody has expressed any concerns about her weight gain, in fact everyone who has seen her has been more than happy with her development. I think its normal for weight gain to slow at some point though, one dr told me bf babies get long and then they gain weight.
