Morning ladies,

Can i ask those of you who are fully breastfeeding, what contraception you are using?

I've read all the leaflets that has been given to me regarding this, but i dont know what to do. It tells you that exclusive bf can be a good contraceptive, but i dont know if i want to take that risk, as i have bf my other 2 and i did still had irregular periods .

I cant take any hormonal types for medical reasons, so that doesnt leave much left. The IUD does not appeal to me either. Hubby is refusing to wear condoms too. AAARRRGGHH!

Dont know what to do.

If all hormonal options are out, as far as I know that does just leave you with the copper IUD, barrier methods (diaphragm, femidom, condoms) or possibly natural family planning? I don't know how well the latter works if you're breastfeeding and have irregular periods though :-/.

Personally I wouldn't trust BF as my sole method of contraception - I've heard too many "oops" stories!

BF isn't a reliable contaception because you never know when you're going to start to ovulate again.

I take the mini pill (progestogen only pill). Would that one be unsuitable for you too? It only contains 1 hormone so some people can take it who can't take other types of pill.

Other than that I agree with pp.

Hope you find something suitable

condoms for us... not that its an issue at moment for us as last thing I want!!! :haha:

xxx

I have the Implanon implant ( hormonal in the arm implant).
It lasts 3 years.
So far so good.

Other known options whilst BF-
- mini pill
- Mirena ( another implant like coil )
- 3 monthly hormone injection

All the above options are hormonal tho.

We use condoms as don't want to rely on breastfeeding as contraception!

I had the Mirena before we decided to start trying to get pregnant and I'm getting it again as soon as possible (hopefully at my 6 week checkup).

thanks everyone.

i cant take anything with hormones in, so even the mini pill is no good.

I wish condoms would just do, but hubby says he might aswell just do 'pull out' method. Im just keeping away from him right now tho, as i just dont want the worry.

To be honest we just use the " pull out method" I haven't had a period yet and we want another lo in a year anyways :)

We've used the pull out method, but I've heard a lot of 'oops' stories from that as well. You could do the copper IUD, but my OB told me that a lot of women who use the copper IUD have really heavy periods.. so I decided to stay away from that. I'm using the minipill right now as well.

You could always tell him if he refuses to use condoms, then you refuse to have sex. That might do the trick. :haha: I know my DH doesn't like condoms either, but honestly after one scare after I had LO, I'm not willing to risk it.

I'm using breastfeeding alone (but only cos we want another and don't mind when!) its working so far... My gp advised mini pill as contraceptive at my 6wk checkup. Only trouble is u have to take it at exactly the same time everyday, which I know I'd never remember!

I had the copper IUD and liked it, it freaked me out at first till I saw how tiny it was... I never felt it or anything.

We used condoms.
I don't want any hormones as I have pcos and irregular periods. we want to ttc#2 next year so in seems pointless to have the copper coil in or a few months as its not as if we have that much sex anyway! Once a week on a good week..far too tired!
No condoms=no sex!

What is the mini pill called? I've heard from a few people about a pill that I should steer clear of if I want to try again soon as people have had probs after using it but I can't think what it's called!

I got the shot which was and is the biggest mistake of my life, I'm plannig to ttc and haven't had a period since November 2012 and it's been 6 months since my next shot was due. I don't think I will ever go on birth control again lol

This is what worries me! I was on the combined pill before and have bad no problems. Each time I came off it I fell pregnAnt the next month

I've heard people struggle after the mini pill or injection.

I don't like the idea of the coil or implant, not sure I'm even allowed them after ectopic pregnancy? Could be wrong tho!
This is so confusing!
