The thing at the back of my house is my garden & the front is front garden :haha:

To me a yard is the paved/concrete bit around horses stables

It's rather interesting what people consider a garden.

To me it doesn't matter as everyone knows them near enough as what they are.

I'm American and like the other poster said, we said front yard and backyard. A garden is where you grow fruit/veg maybe flowers, but if you have flowers in your backyard it's still a backyard. I love cultural differences!

Garden here too.

Imagine calling a 'lady garden' a 'lady yard' :haha:

A yard is more a working place...like the builders yard...my dad had one for he logistics business to keep the vans on...and we had a yard dog...that lived there to protect it. Gardern is the green (well covered in weeds) thing at the back of the house.

A lady yard could be the new term for shaved :haha:

To me a garden has grass and a yard is a concrete area out back, usually quite small probs with an alley at the back of it :)

I would say garden for the whole thing. DH (American) said that to him garden = somewhere to grow carrots etc. Lawn = grassed area. Or in general just yard.
