What do you do about dummy sterilising?

Wow. I never sterilise dummies! Actually, I did one once, when the dog picked it up! :haha:

I wash them in hot water, or stick them in my own mouth if we're out. We have a dummy chain to stop them falling on the floor.

Really not trying to stir the pot or judging anyone or anything, just honestly curious. I don't use my mouth on my babies stuff but I know some do. Does anyone actually think that counts as sterilizing? Yes, it washes the dirt/hair and other stuff away (which turns my stomach so I'd NEVER do it for that reason alone), but if anything, your mouth would just add even more bacteria then before. Or are you just saying you don't worry about sterilization and that is your way of cleaning the dirt off of the pacifier. I've always been curious about why people would just stick it in their mouths and think that was cleaning it? It's mind boggling to me.

And like I said. Not trying to judge.. everyone feels differently about different ways of caring for their children and I wouldn't want someone to judge me just because we disagree on a child rearing method.

A possible answer to your question?

I have one of the Milton dummie ball things and they fantastic but I'm a it of an OCD freak with germs so I sterilise the dummies every day I still do dd1's twice a week and she's 2 lol

Yep, I just do it to get the dust/ animal hair off it! I know it's gross, but I'd rather have cat hair in my mouth than baby's!
For the record, I clean and vacuum my house every day, I have 2 cats and a dog, so it's necessary!

Back on subject of sterilising, I only sterilise milk bottles because of bacteria like E.coli, which could be present in the milk.
I think it's important that baby is exposed to everyday bacteria to build up his immune system. I'm not a germaphobe!

Phew I'm glad some others are like me and don't sterilise dummies too often! Not that I disagree with sterilising at all I just wondered if I had been doing the right thing lol! I sterilise them every now and again (basically when I remember too) and buy her new ones once every month as she loses them anyway, but I don't sterilise regularly. If it's dropped on the floor I will wash it with warm water perhaps but I do also stick it in my mouth as it's merely to get rid of dust and dog hair like a pervious pp, not for the purpose of sterilising.
I think some bacteria exposure is better for building immune systems obviously within reason.
Think it can all depend on your child too, my lg is 8 months and has only been ill once with a slight cough for a couple of days so perhaps I'm more relaxed than some other mums because of that. Plus now she's moving around she picks up anything and sticks it in her mouth these days, she was trying to eat the corner of the rug the other day!
But even when she was small I rarely sterilised her dummies. Only her bottles got sterilised, and still do but more so out of habit than necessity.

MAM dummies come in little microwave sterilising boxes. We've recently started trying to use them on the advice of the HV due to reflux. I was VERY skeptical but it seems to help sooth him. At the minute we have 8 dummies (4 boxes of 2). If he drops one (even at home) I stick it to one side and swap it. By the end of the day we usually have used at least 2 boxes of dummies so I whack the 2 boxes in the microwave so they're ready for the next morning. I use a clip if he takes one out but generally doesn't. I certainly wouldn't be putting it in my mouth if it fell on the floor... My dog and cat's arses have been on that floor... Bork!

My LO has some MAM dummies but I didn't know you could sterilise them in the microwave! How do you do it? x

Did they come with the clippy box? You pop them in and fill water in the bottom to the fill line, close the box then microwave for 3 minutes. Leave to cool for 5!

I sterilise them every night with any bottles we use that day. (I combie feed - some boob and some formula). I stopped using soap though because I could never get the soapy bubbles to get out of the back of the dummy. I figure the steam steriliser is enough anyway.

I had that problem so now i rinse his dummies under the tap and then put them in the steriliser x

when she was little i sterilized every day but we had lots of dummies so i got a fresh one ot if it went on the floor. im a bit more lenient now, may wash in mouth etc. i dont use a sterilizer anymore as shes on cows milk but i wash in washing up liquid and put in a bowl of boiling water. im a bit funny about dummies!
