What do you make of this?

They don't slit the Animals throat in the UK. I am all for there being an option but childrebn should be able to eat what they like. If it is a halal menu there will be no pork. Therfore non muslim children can't eat it. I am all for cultural inclusion but our country always seems to go to the extreme
xx

the nursery kyle will be going to serves halal meat only so he will be on the veggie option the main meat he likes is pork and if he cannot have that there is not much point in giveng him a meat meal

Hannaashia I am not uneducated thank you. I live in Saudi Arabia, a Middle East country I believe, Pork products are banned, its an offence to try to bring them into the country. Get YOUR facts right before calling others uneducated

That is Saudi Arabia, cross over to lebanon or go to Dubai and you can have it.

I dont really care how a animal is killed, but I'm just sick of always catering to the muslim Religions needs. What about children with special dietary needs? You dont see the menus or ingredients changing for them, they just have to do with a packed lunch. To make a catholic/ christian child follow another religions rules is wrong IMO.

I think that is because there are probably more children that are Muslim then have other dietary requirements. If it is a school with predominantly Muslim children then it shouldn't be a problem. I don't understand why there is such an uproar about it, it was one school in Harrow that has a massive Muslim community. Also, Christians are not supposed to eat pork either which is clearly stated in Exodus chapter 24. The food is still the same just the meat is halal and that doesn't and shouldn't mean anything to anyone unless they are Muslim or Sikh who aren't allowed to eat Halal.

I utterly agree with blah11. Why on earth is it being presumed that muslims arn't British? Their culture IS our culture :dohh: Plus, as a veggie I find it bizarre to say halal is wrong yet some of the horrific 'standard' meat farming practices are fine.

Regardless, this story was shown to be utterly untrue. The council were talking about making a halal/non halal option for some schools, in the same report as they talked about different dietary requirements like allergies and vegetarianism. But then, if it didn't have a racist spin it wouldn't be the good ol' Daily Mail.

Don't believe everything you read!

Why? Christian kids don't have dietary requirements so what does it matter? Would it be wrong to cater to Jewish requirements?

Personally, I wish they would just take religion out of all of it. Causes more problems than good. But I wouldn't be narrow enough to consider it 'always catering to Muslims'.

I think its wrong to cater to any individual childs needs, unless you're prepared to do it for all of them. I think the " Halal option" is a fab idea. I just forcing Halal food on non muslim families will cause problems.

The council report was about catering for all kids to be fair. I just don't think the majority of people would notice. For example, many Mcdonalds are halal, but people don't raise an eyebrow.

Just to me, as a non-meat eater, I find it hard to see the big deal when it's all dead animal IYKWIM? If it doesn't matter to other religions but does to muslim families, then surely it's easier to cater to them? JMO.

So if its wrong to cater to childrens individual needs then what sort of a society are we living in? Not a nice one in my opinion like 'Oh is doesn't matter if Jonny is a vegetarian he has to eat meat cos we don't cater... and Sally, doesn't matter if she's allergic to tomatoes we don't cater to individuals needs." I love individuality and we should cherish and nuture it, it is the spice of life and keeps life interesting. I definitely don't agree that it is something we should wipe out all together to have a boring uniform society.

The EYFS and Everychild matters says we should cater for everyones needs and I love that fact. But if your just going along the guidline of one relgious tradition then I fail to see how that is including every child.

What if they want to eat pork, or have bacon or sausages. They can't because it isn't halal. Why not have a halal option and non. That way your catering for every childs needs
xx

I thought halal referred to the method of slaughter? Muslims don't eat pork so there wont be a halal option of pork anyway..?

Yeah I mean if the whole menu is halal then there won't be any pork included in the the menu. Whereas if they had a halal option the other children could have another option as well

What if they want to eat pizza but it isn't on the menu that day? But true Christians wouldn't be eating pork either. Nor would Jewish children, Sikh, and no doubt many other religions. Should they just be catering for athiests or agnostics?

I think a packed lunch is best option!!

There should be an option for everybody. Inclusion not exclusion. In my school we had a veggie option, a vegan option and halal

xx

Halal actually means 'allowed' so not just the method of slaughter.

If the lunch menu was lamb, veggie lasagne and halal chicken, why not make the lamb halal so that meat eaters, regardless of religion, have two options? Granted, it isn't fair to veggies though. I'd put quorn on my menu if it was up to me

And P.P.S - Yes people do eat pork in the Middle East so stop being uneducated. There are Christians in the Middle East you know.

That is really rude. You may disagree with another poster but it is unnecessary to respond like that. My Dh has worked in both Dubai and Saudi but has never had pork there or seen any pork products either.

At school we have 3 options, meat main course, veggie main course or cold lunch which has a meat and non- meat option. Our menu has been changed to reflect dietary requirements in our school as we have 2 children with severe allergies so we are a pea free zone! No humous, split pea soup etc. Especially in a primary school it would be pretty impossible to cater for absolutely every dietary request.
