Hello! Can anyone tell me what happens at the 16 week midwife appointment in the UK? just want to know what to expect! Thanks xxx

At mine, we went over the blood results from the blood I gave at my booking-in appointment, talked about the Anti-D shot (they took blood from my husband as I am Rhesus-negative), she asked me how I was feeling, whether I've felt the baby yet. I talked to her about home births and about a few complaints I had (heartburn and back pain). Then at the end, she put the doppler on my belly and we heard the heartbeat (but I don't think every midwife/surgery does this). And of course, she checked my urine for protein/sugar. She didn't weigh me (which I was a bit glad for).

Good luck!

Mine was rubbish, she took bp, listened to baby, did a wee dip and sent me on my way, all done and dusted in under 10 mins. Was an utter waste of time.

Don't be disappointed if yours is similar, I know a lot of girls on here said there's was the same but some appts where more thorough.

yeah mine was disappointing aswell. did urine sample, blood pressure, listened to babys heartbeat (can't remember if i had blood tests at this app') and then basically booted out of the building.

And i went in there expecting to be talking about loads of pregnancy things, or to be at least asked how i'm coping with it or something  hope yours goes nicely though, FX'd for a nice midwife!

Oh wow I really hope I get to hear baby's heartbeat! Water Baby sorry you had a rubbish experience - hope mine doesn't go like that! Thanks for the advice ladies, it's good to know what to expect x

Wow while I've been posting a good few have replied saying your 16 wk appointments were rubbish! :(

My 16 week appointment was lovely. My midwife is really nice. We were in the appointment about 45 minutes.

We talked about the results of my last blood tests. She took my blood pressure. Tested my urine. Weighed me. Even though in my maternity pack I have a sheet of what happens at each appointment it didnt say I was having heartbeat or just a check of abdomen, but when she said "jump on the bed and lets listen to the heartbeat" I was so excited. So she checked the heartbeat, which took some moving about because there is still a lot of room and you could hear one of my vessels "swooshing" sound too. Also felt my uterus.

And lastly had triple blood test. x

Are you all on you're first baby's then as I don't even see my midwife now until I am 25 weeks? I see the consultant on the 22nd of this month as I had a section with the twins x

This is my 2nd child.......I now don't have another appointment until I am 25 weeks. I think they include the 20 weeks scan as an in-between. x

This is my 1st child. I am sorry some of you had rubbish appointments :(

Mine was a real let down.. this is how it went..

i walked in to see the midwife and straight away she said are you sure your pregnant only i dont have any notes for you ? (great start)

i handed her my record book to show i had my booking in appointment at my local hospital and i had recieved my first scan, so she flicked through her folder again and said well i havent been sent through any notes for you how long have you been with this surgery ? oh only about 25yrs i replyed !!!

oh well im sure they will show up then she said so we will get on with your appointment, well i see you have one child already (my 5yr old son was with me) oh well that makes it easier as you know what to expect.. well let me just start by saying hello and goodbye as you probably wont be seeing me again as im transfering to another area so you will have another midwife when you come next (great this happened to me with my son - i had 3 different midwifes)

so she then took my blood pressure, checked my urine sample then asked if i was interested in having the triple test which i was so i had that done and she then said well thats it then nothing more to do today il book you in for around 21 weeks as by then you will have had your 20 week scan and hopefully your notes will have turned up..

I said is that it ? dont you want to check me or listen to the babies heart beat ? to which she replied nooo dont worry there is plenty of time to do that as the weeks go on and i was shipped out of her room :(

All in all i dont think i was even in the room 10mins !!

Im having my second (i have a 5yr old son), i had my booking in appointment at what we thought was 12 weeks but when i had my scan i was only 10 weeks..

I then had my 16 week midwife appointment at my local dr's surgery

Im having my 20 week scan on the 16th september

Then im having another midwife appointment at 21 weeks and then 25 weeks

I cant understand why you are skipping the 21 week check ?

I had mine today midwife was lovely.

She checked my blood pressure, took blood for the Downs, spinabifida test, asked about my general health, any pains or bleeding since my last appointment. Checked my sample.

Warned me that at 17 wks (mine was a week late) that she might not be able to pick up the heartbeat but asked did I want her to try. She managed to hear it in the background of my pulse, personally I couldn't make it out before she lost it again.

I asked about the effects of pregnancy on an existing scar. And that was about it.

It was very much what I expected, it was a quick general check on my health as much as anything. Not sure what other people are expecting from these appointments.
