hi:flower:

i think that LO has a bit of reflux so took him to the docs last week and he prescribed infant gaviscon but only 4 days worth. so we went back yesterday to get more and the doctor wouldn't give us anymore! i told him it had worked a treat and he was much more settled and not screaming after feeds but he said oh he may be fine now its calmed down. he also said its best not to give them any meds at all when they're that tiny.

so before i start acting like a crazy mother demanding meds:haha: is it worth trying comfort milk and can someone please tell me what actually is comfort milk?

we tried him on hungry baby milk a couple of weeks ago and it seriously did not agree with him he screamed even more than normal.

any thoughts much appreciated:flower:

Comfort milk is aimed at colic & constipation, its parrtly hydrolised and has reduced lactose so it easier for them to digest. I tried my little girl on Aptamil Comfort because each time i fed her (was breastfeeding) about an hour after feeds she was screaming in agony and would have a mega explosive nappy. She was feeding every 2 hours anf my healthvisitor suggested trying it after many meeting with b/f councellors and advisors. I got refered to peadicatrics after keeping on at my GP and it turned out that she has actually got cows milk allergy.

I was told before my app to steer clear of hungry baby formula if she had an upset tummy as it is far more harder to digest

Hi hun

Comfort milk is aimed at reducing colic and constipation rather than reflux I believe. Holly was on gaviscon but to be honest, it worked for a while but seemed to stop being so efficient and just made her constipated so I took her off it. I just wanted to say what has really helped is keeping her upright during a feed and for 20 minutes afterwards, this seems to reduce the amount that comes back up and she seems in less pain :flower:

xx

If you google comfort milk you will find a lot of people have used it for reflux and it seems to have worked for them. It is aimed at reducing colic and constipation though, not reflux, but if it has helped others, I would consider it.
Jessica has been on comfort milk since 2 weeks old and its worked wonders for her..shes never had colic or been constipated and used to bring milk back up...ever since using comfort, shes never had that problem. Give it a go, it cant do your LO any harm.

To be honest, We put her on comfort milk as I read it was thicker than normal formula, as she was feeding every hour as a newborn...that worked too, as she went from feeding every hour to every 3.

I woul say though, if your LO isnt constipated, be prepared for the "explosive" nappies! lol x

SMA do a staydown milk which is designed for babys with reflux. However... Iv heard normal SMA can make babys constipated so id imagine a thicker feed would too. I use cow and gate comfort milk, it helped for a while then we had to get the gaviscon again because it stopped working, now the gaviscon has stopped working too :( its all trial and error im afraid until you find what works. Good luck xxx

i changed to cow and gate confort and it has really worked! before after every feed he would cry and be in pain and was very constipated and it has been great, its like having a different baby
u can try it, it wont do any harm! athough beware for very smelly and dark green poos

just a quick question, why does ur doc have to prescibe gaviscon? nicole was on comfort milk too with colief drops but didnt work so went back to cow and gate 1 with gaviscon. i bought mine over the counter

tbh i didn't realise you could buy it so just presumed it had to be prescribed:dohh:

we've now got some that someone has kindly given to me who didn't need it anymore so we're sorted now.:flower:

Sorry to gatecrash the thread... My lo may have reflux so thinking comfort milk may help. How do you ladies make it up?? With normal formula i have the bottles with cooled boiled water ready...and only add formula when shes ready for feed.... Can i do this with comfort formula??

Xx

I use Aptimil comfort for my LO as he suffered from colic and it worked brilliantly.
She now has a bit of reflux and dr gave us gaviscon but haven't managed to use it much as it makes the milk taste funny and she doesn't drink it as well. So just keeping her uprigh post feeding for half hour and burping well which helps.
U can buy comfort milk in most places so I would give it a try.
Warning though, it does make their poo really runny an greeny for a while. My LO has sof faeces and it varies from light brown to greeny brown but that's nomal on the milk so just persist with it.
I u have any questions and u use Aptimil there is a e mail address on their website which let's u speak live to a midwife online which is fab!

Comfort milk isnt meant for reflux, but for wind etc. We tried it at the end of our tether and it made the issue ten times worse!

Reflux milks are thicker and help to stay down.

Infant Gaviscon is literally just a feed thickener. It doesnt neutralise acid like adult gaviscon would. Im not sure how someone bought it over the counter, because its prescription only.

I cant understand why the doc wouldnt prescribe you something that was helping. I can only imagine that when you took LO off it the symptoms only returned! I would speak to another doctor if Gaviscon ewas working for you. It drives me mad that doctors dont take reflux seriously, its draining for mum and baby!

If a baby still struggles on a staydown or gaviscon/feed thickener, i would suggest mum returns to the doctor for further meds.
