I think I need to tweak something. We don't actually HAVE a schedule as such, but we have a routine.

Emma will generally get up when I do, try as might to get her into her bed at 4:30am she refuses 99% of the time.

About 6:45am she will be sucking her thumb and rubbing her eyes, so I put her down for a nap. Then she's up an hour later and I get her changed and dressed etc then we are off to school shortly after.

She's now screaming and crying for that first nap and even though she seems tired, she just stands up on her bed and screams. I'm trying to get the bigger kids ready for school etc and am usually tired and grumpy that time of day so it's getting hard!

Just seeing what other parents are doing at this stage for the first nap. She's also doing this at bedtime and I end up sitting with her on the couch now watching TV all evening while she sucks her thumb and snuggles in. It's lovely, but my OH can't do any of the stuff we want OE need to do! She's up so early and now out with us half the evening and I'm so tired and can't stay up very late. We bedshare at night from about 9pm generally though she was starting out in her own bed until this recent crying stuff.

At that age Isla had two naps a day, first one was about 2 hours after waking up in the morning and was usually around 45 min but was sometimes as long as 90 min, then she would be awake for about 3 hours before having her second nap which was constantly 90 min, then was awake for about 3-4 hours before going to bed at 7 pm (I tried to keep her on the 2-3-4 schedule of awake time as that seemed to work well for her). Nights were really hard on us from about 9-12 months, she was up through the night every 2 hours or so for that period of time, but her daytime sleep remained pretty consistent. I think 10 months is generally a tough time for sleep, some babies struggle with naps, others with night sleep, and some with sleep in general. Just try to survive it and things should improve.

Thank you! I find it very hard especially from the afternoon on, as she's generally due for a nap just as we leave to get my son from school and she won't sleep in the car/stroller/carrier. So she has this nap about 4pm and then is up until 8pm and getting up at 4:30 and waking constantly through the night to feed, thrash around or rip my hair out! She's having 3 naps at the moment just because her night sleep is so short and crap.

It depends we are either 2 decent naps or 3 poor ones. If good it's up at 6:30-7 nap at 10:30 for an hr. Then nap at 2:30-3 for 1.5-2 hours.

Or if bad it'll be up at 6.30-7 then 30 mins at 10.30, 30 mins at 2.30 and 30 mins at 5.30,

That said my lb was an iugr preemie so we are behind developmentally

Things around 10 months were really tough because of sickness and separation anxiety, but generally our pattern has always been the same. Upstairs for bath, milk, cuddles and bed probably around 6:30-6:45pm. We bedshared as well, but from 8 months, she at least started in her own room in the cot because she started to jump up from sleep and crawl really fast and nearly fell off the bed several times, even with a bed guard. So she started going to sleep in her own room until the first wake up after she went to bed and then one of us would go get her and bring her in. But I would say generally she would be in bed, at least trying to go to sleep by 7ish. She did have a period of really disrupted sleep around 8-9 months where she was taking an hour or two to fall asleep and waking every 30 minutes in the evenings, so that was rough. We kept the routine the same though, and one of us would sit up there with her and cuddle her and soothe (or try to soothe) her to sleep. She would wake a few times during the night, no idea how many, maybe 2-4 times, sometimes more. But she dropped night feeds at 9 months, so it was just for a cuddle. This was in the winter for us, so she would sleep longer during the winter months because it was darker, so often she might sleep until 7am, obviously with wake ups during the night. Her first nap would have been around 10-11am. Not sure that's very helpful, but maybe if you can get back into a better routine in the evenings with going to bed, it might help. I know definitely at that age, being downstairs and especially in front of the tv would have woken her up a lot and probably would have made sleep difficult. During the day, it was two naps, that one about 10 or 11am and then again around 2pm usually. Both maybe an hour, rarely more than that.

I use babysleepsite to help create a schedule. (This link will take you directly to their sample 10-month-old schedules.) I do timed schedules because that is what works for us. My babies tend to stay up very late until I can get them on a schedule, and I need my sleep. It does take a few days, sometimes a couple of weeks, to get the schedule set. I use theirs as an example and then adjust it to fit my life. All of my kids have a quiet time every day from 1-3pm, so I make sure that my babies take a nap during this time, too.

Mine normally wakes about 7am then naps 9.30am for an hour, second nap usually at 1.30 for 1.5-2hr.

At night we do bedtime with his sister I feed him to sleep between 7-8pm. He goes in his cot then when he wakes a few hours later comes in with us. He feeds 1-3 times during the night.

Not getting an evening sucks, it so important to get time when you aren't holding a child, being sat on etc...

I'm not sure I read right though do you get up at 4.30 every morning?

Yes LoveCakes, I do! It's an attempt to get some kid-free time with my OH as we barely seem to see eachother. He gets up at 2amish (he's got sleep troubles) and goes to bed at 7pm so all of our sleep schedules are (pardon me) totally fucked up.

Emma is having such bad separation anxiety all of a sudden, so this morning I tried to get her into her cot about 3:30am but she was screaming the house down. I gave up. She sat on my lap while we watched OH play games and she fell asleep on me, I managed to get her into bed and she slept till 7:30am which was amazing!

xdxxtx thank you! I will have a look through that schedule :). It looks good.

At that age both my kids had two naps a day, first one was about 2 or 3 hours after waking up in the morning and was usually around 1 hour or 2, then they would be awake for about 3 hours before having their second nap which was 1-2 hours. They were going to bed at 8pm, waking up at around 3am for a bottle of milk and then got back to sleep till 7am. I have to say that I did't have any problems with them going to sleep at that age. I had more problems earlier...

Robin usually goes to bed at 6-6.30pm and wakes up between 6-7am but he only naps an hour About 9ish and then maybe about 12ish if I'm lucky but not always. I say usually because last night he woke up at midnight until 3am.

That's the routine he got himself in after we stopped letting him sleep after 3pm, a mummy friend advised to stop the last nap so he'd get into a bedtime routine when he was about 6 months old and moving into his own room.

My grandson is a little younger (almost 8 months) he usually has about 2-3 naps a day but one of those naps will only be a quick refresh, first nap is usually about 10-10.30am, he can sleep for up to 2 hours at this time, second nap will be at about 3-4pm which will be about an hour long, if he takes a third nap it will be at about 7ish and can last about 15-30 mins, he goes to bed at 9.30pm and that will be him until 8-8.30am. He has been in this routine since he was about 4 months so I am guessing he will still be in it at 10 months.

Just a whinge - her sleep is getting WORSE and WORSE!!

I've got her naps on a pretty good routine, but now she won't go to bed at night unless I have her in bed with me to start with. Then she's waking up to nurse about 4 times, and another few times just to party.

Last night she fell asleep at 7:30, was awake by 8:15 and took an hour to fall back asleep (nursed on left side), nursed at 10pm on right side, woke at 11 just to climb on my face and bite my ear, woke at midnight and was wide awake for 1.5 hours, woke at 2am and was awake for half an hour (nursed on left side), woke again 20 minutes later (nursed on right side).

I got up at 4:30 because I was frustrated and couldn't sleep, I tried getting her into her cot (crib) but she screamed her head off so she got up with me. Nursed again from both sides, had some toast, put her back in her bed at 6:50 and lay her back down 5 times before she stopped screaming at 7:10. It's 7:13 and I can hear her babbling away to herself. Now her naps will be messed up and she will be up later at night than I can handle.

This baby used to wake ONCE a night by 2 months old and was sleeping all the way through half of the nights a week until 5 months :-(.

I love this age for how wonderful she is during the day, but hate the night so much!!? Bleh.

She's working on the first stage before taking her first steps, so maybe that isn't helping. She's letting go of furniture when cruising and standing there not holding on and cheering for herself, and all that fun stuff. Getting braver and stronger and figuring out balance.
