I'm not starting a debate here, but just want to ask a question if you guys don't mind. :flower:

I'm buddhist and i married English man, and in the pat 4-5 years in-laws came here every xmas and usually mil who demands us to do proper xmas. Also last night she said she wants me to give Lincoln a proper xmas this year coz they won't come.

But her proper xmas contains lots or presents , full decorations and only family members in the house. we are invited to our friend's house for xmas this year and oh think we might go coz other friends can't join us coz they can't take day off work.

so please tell me what makes a proper xmas.

PS: she wants me to tell Lincoln Jesus story as well.

Well personally I think that's pretty demanding on her part. Are you raising your LO Buddhist as well? If so, its not really her business to push Christmas on him.

Christmas includes the tree, decorations, santas, snowmen, lots of bows and fancy wrapping paper, a meal with a turkey, roasted veggies, gravy, bread puddings, mince pies ( I have no idea what these are but since she's British I'm pretty sure she wants mince pies), etc. If she's highly religious I'd say she'll probably want a nativity scene.

Oh, and while you're at it, can you make it snow in Thailand on Christmas Eve/Day please? Thanks.

 Sorryyy I had to add that.

no,she's not religious. she hates people going to church and she never been (oh told me)
i will let lo choose what he want to be, Christian or Buddhist i don't mind.
i'm going to make xmas cake and some cookies, put the tree up a week before xmas , we have all the decorations ready from last year.

To me, a 'proper' Christmas is a day spent with family and close friends. Preferably with lots of excited children running around.
Yes, there are presents involved, but that's not what it's all about. Here we tend more towards a BBQ/salads kind of meal.

It's just an excuse to spend time with people you love. Oh yeah, and get a bit squiffy!

I'm with Freyasmum, Christmas is all about family, spending time with your loved ones

that's what i thought. but 2 years ago we went to our friends dinner party on 24th and mil was really angry that we didn't stay at home (doing nothing anyway) and she didn't go. she complaint afterwards that i didn't no anything about xmas and we should all stayed at home with family only. I thought xmas includes spending time with friends as well.
i think we might join our friends this year coz there will be many kids and lo can play with them rather staying at home 3 of us and not much fun for him playing with his 2 old folks :winkwink:

Christmas for me is all about the tree, the christmas dinner (and smells), going for a walk in the freezing cold and seeing all the children riding their new bikes/skates, playing games, and spending time with people u love

Christmas music/films/TV shows, the tree, decorations, lights, prezzies, crackers, mince pies, seeing everyone, having a few drinks, chocolates :)

You mil HAS NO BUSSINESS sticking her nose in the up bringing of YOUR child.... if she isnt religious why explain all about jesus to him..... if your sending him to a standard svhool he'll learn it there wats the rush...... i would be on the side with the other ladies xmas is about family and friends .......

but most would see it as deco....... carol singing prezzies dinner (although i love my xmas dinner) santa ... jesus the tree snowmen for kids i dont see why you have to be technical lilly doesnt no the story of jesus she nos santa will come and its magical we have a key for santa cause our fire is too small for his fat belly..... he is your son hun...... dont bring him up the way you dont want to...... do it your way thats why your his mum and :finger: up to the MIL  xxx

:hugs: so sorry your mil is dictating like this hon. i'm with the others, christmas to us is just about spending time with the people you love, for us, thats always been my parents and grandparents.

If your MIL isn't religious then why on earth is she getting so worked up about it?!

Anyway, to me Christmas is about spending time with the people you love (whether they be family, friends or both), Christmas mass and seeing the kids all dressed up as shepherds and angels, carolling, enjoying the build up with the pretty lights, German market, etc and I'm sure in a couple of years watching Harvey's face when Santa's been will be a big part of it too.

Christmas is all about being with family and friends.

Yes I love the whole tree, dinner, gifts and santa etc....but the worst xmas I ever had was when I lived 400 miles away from my family and friends and had to work xmas morning. I still had a tree, gifts and xmas dinner but I was also so sad and lonely as I had noone special to share it with me!

So definately doing whats going to make you happy with the people who make you happy!
