My first pregnancy was anything but normal. I was going to an OB/GYN at the hospital my mom worked at, I was on Medicaid at the time, and my baby ended up having Turner Syndrome and passing away at 19 weeks.

What should I expect with a normal first appointment? I will be going to a family practice doctor this time, and I will be in my 6th week.

What tests will he most likely do? Can I request a test if he doesn't plan to do it? I'm pretty sure I have to be referred by him (per insurance co. policy) if I want to have an OB/GYN - which I would kind of prefer. I'm thinking that I might qualify as high risk (34 yrs. old w/ previous pregnancy complication). Does anyone have any thoughts/advice on how that works?

Well usually, they will take your medical history first. For me, they weighed me, did an ultrasound "(transvaginal) and took my blood. But they took my blood only because we found nothing on the ultrasound (because I was too early and we didnt know) so the doc wanted to check the HcG levels...
Also, they do an internal exam from what I know... like a pap. But I didnt kave mine done because I just was at the gyno a few weeks before falling pregnant.
Hope this helps a bit...

Both pregnancies my first appointments were simple and boring. Checked my weight, peed in a cup to check for protein in urine, medical history, pap smear/exam, discussed what to expect next and ordered blood work.

This time because I've had 2 losses, she scheduled me for an internal u/s at 7 weeks (which I get tomorrow) and had me get the RhoGam shot. That's normally something you don't get until 28 weeks pregnant if you have a negative blood type but because I had losses and didn't get the shot then, she wanted me to have it now just in case.

I don't know were you're from but in washington that is high risk for 2 reasons over 30 and previous complications however they can't test for anything until about 12 weeks

Good news! I checked with my policy, and an OB/GYN is not considered a specialist. I don't have to go to a family practice doc first and get a referral like I thought. I canceled the appt. with the first doc and scheduled one with an OB. - And since they had a cancellation, they gave me an appt. for this Friday (in two days!). I feel so much better with this doctor situation already. SO relieved! I feel like I will get good prenatal care now. :)

I just found out today that I'm pregnant and might already be 8 weeks!!! My first appointment is tomorrow and I'm nervous. Not sure of what exactly to expect either. Hopefully DH will be able to get off work to be there.
