My lg will be 4.5 months by Christmas and I was thinking of giving her her first taste of real food on Christmas Day. She loves her milk so it will probably mean more to her than presents lol

I want to try baby led weaning.

Any ideas for that first mouthful?

I started with purees and his first was apples. First finger food was sweet potato cubes. Good luck, solids r so fun! :)

First was banana can't actually remember with number 2 could off been sweet potato or broccoli!

Puréed carrots. Their first finger food was a finger of toast with a thin layer of jam. I traditionally weaned, although I wish I'd done BLW.

A piece of pear - I did blw. 4.5 months may be a bit young to start with blw though, she may not be developmentally ready. Ella wasn't ready til a couple of days before she turned 6 months.

We did BLW at a few days before 6 months. Her first food was avocado & she loved it! She's almost 7 months and avocado is still a favorite, along with zucchini, sweet potato & beans lol

I'd look at whether she's developmentally ready 1st. Esp if blw, they should preferably be able to sit unaided and grasp things in their hand themselves, picking food up from tray.

DD was 6.5 months when she was developmentally ready.... she had sausage and cheese! Not the best 1st food but that's what we were eating at the time.

Lots of suggestions! I may just give her some purée on a spoon then if it's a little early. I just have it in my head I want it to be different from any other day for her even if she won't remember but obviously won't push anything she's not ready for.

Some great suggestions for later though thanks.

Your LO will be 4 days younger than my son was at his first Christmas and he really wasn't ready for anything other than his milk. xx

Not telling you what to do as you are mum but i would suggest holding off with the food and thinking of another way to make the day special. Only a suggestion but know some babies suffer tummy problems when first introduced to solids, especially before the recommended 6 months, which could make the day not such a good one.

Eating isn't special, we all do it every day. Solids makes things so much more messy, both going in and going out.

I have to point out I didn't pick this date just because it was Christmas. Here they recommend weaning from 4-6 months so I was thinking of doing it around then anyway. Only if she is ready though I wouldn't push her into it.

I have to pipe in here too. I've noticed a lot of people on this forum get quite upset at the thought of solids before 6 months. I live in Canada and the recommendation is between 4-6 months. LoveCakes isn't suggesting anything ridiculous and I think it is a cute idea. :)

A little baby rice her when LO was 4 and a half months, since then she's been having baby rice or porridge at breakfast time and bottles for the rest of the time.

Today we tried avocado fingers and she loved them was gnawing away like there's no tomorrow, very messy though lots of green stains on everything!

At 4.5 months I don't think she'll manage finger foods but she might be ok with a little bit of puree.

If it's Christmas day I'd just give her some of the Christmas dinner veggies mushed up - carrot, parsnip, potato etc. You could even add a little bit of formula to the potatoes to make it creamier.

Just watch out that there hhasn't been any salt added to the water the vegetables were boiled in.

oh and maybe avoid the sprouts as they can give them a but of a sore tummy at first. Just stick to root vegetables

I'm getting this bib for Wesley to wear on Christmas day : https://www.mamasandpapas.com/product-unisex-christmas-pudding-bib/s0012955/type-s/ there's a reindeer one too! :D

I disagree in the uk were recommended to wean between 4-6months, that's the MARKETING you seen on the food jars. The NHS recommends 6 months.

If you want to do BLW, then wait. It's only a few weeks longer, and I don't see damaging your LOs gut flora on Christmas Day anything special

My LOs first foods as a BLW chicken dinner. She nibbled a carrot and played with the rest.
