I'm using Avent bottles, and LO was using size one teats, now he's on 5oz's so have to use the big bottles, was just wondering if i should be using the size 2 teats that come with the big bottles or keep him on number 1 teats? Avent suggest to use the no 2 teats at 1+ months. My LO is 1 month in 5 days.. Also wondering if anyone knows why you need to even go up a teat? is it just because theres so much more milk, that two holes are better than one to get the milk flowing?

Thankssss :D

Hey there!

It should take about 10-20 mins for a baby to finish a feed. If baby is taking 30 mins plus to take a feed then you probably need to move up a teat size. Also if your baby is starting to fall asleep at the bottle without taking the majority of the feed, then moving up a teat size can solve this problem.

The age recommendations on teats are just guidlines, and if your baby seems happy on size 1 teats, then I would stick with them until you notice feeds taking alot longer or baby suddenly taking less or falling asleep mid-feed.
My DD2 moved from MAM size 1, to MAM size 2 (2m+) at 5 weeks, but then never needed a faster flow, and was (and still is) happy on the size 2's. xx

My LO is 8 weeks old and is still on the avent teats size 1. Its better for him. I tried teat 2 and he just spits out the milk. This attempt was tried twice and every time the same result. He is taking 5oz at the moment but I am trying to get him to drink 6 now... impossible though because he is falling asleep after 4oz usually. Is that the teat then?

Yes it could be.

As they get older, they will be wanting to drink more formula each feed, but still take the same time to drink it all. Hence why you increase the teat flow so baby doesnt get frustrated, tired or bored that the milk isnt coming out fast enough. It may take a few attempts for a baby to get used to a faster flow. Things like a bit of extra wind and dribbling some milk are normal at first when moving up a size. As long as they are not coughing and spluttering alot, or being sick then persevere. xxx

My lo is just one week old and falls asleep at the end of nearly every feeding making it impossible to burp and in turn makes her gassy and spit up her formula. Changing the teat this early seems like a bad idea but figured I would ask your input she just looks so darn uncomfortable.

There is no harm giving the next size teats a go to see if they help. It wont be a waste of money either as you will more than likely need the next size teat up at some point, even if they are too fast for her now.

If your lo does fall asleep when she finishes her bottle, gently put her on your shoulder and pat and rub her back. Keep her upright for 15 mins before you lay her down. Hopefully this should bring up any wind and help the milk settle in her stomach. xxx

Depending on what bottle system you use, another big clue they need go up a teat size is when it collapses under them sucking it, as its a sign they're sucking too hard. Though some systems are designed to prevent teat collapse (dr browns and mam spring to mind). We tried ds out yesterday - disastrously - with an Avent bottle and variflow as his new formula is very thick and I noticed he could collapse the avent teat easily (it was either collapse or spit and spill everywhere...)
