Hi
I'm having a coil fitted in a few weeks, just wanted to hear some experiences of both types as I am undecided which one to go for!

I had the copper for 7 years between my kids and had no problems with it. I just got a 2nd one placed about a month ago. I like it because it's good for 10 years and is non-hormonal. The hormones really mess my metabolism and sex-drive up.

I don't have one personally but I've been told that the copper coil is more likely to make periods worse, I have really bad periods and my dr recommended the mirena because it can be really effective with slowing down flow and easing pain

I had the mirena fitted yesterday. Not gonna lie, was not fun having it fitted but was just pretty uncomfortable rather than painful. Cramped most of yesterday but feel fine today. It lasts 5 years if you want it to and is also meant to reduce or get rid of periods totally.

I'm happy so far! My docs generally recommend the mirena over the copper coil.

I personally would go with Mirena I loved it and never had any problems with it. I would tell anyone about it that I could because it's non hormonal and other things won't mess it up like antibiotics or other medications I have never had the copper but i loved the mirena.

Actually Mirena DOES secrete hormones into your system. That's why the Mirena coil makes your periods lighter, just like being on the pill. I'm a breast cancer survivor and so can't have any synthetic hormones. I had a copper coil for a couple years. I had no problems with it at all. During the time I had it in I wasn't having periods so I don't know about it making periods heavier or not. I've heard that can go either way with copper. Good luck! The first day is uncomfortable with cramps but after that you shouldn't feel it at all.

I gad the marina fitted on Tuesday. Can't comment on thee procedure as I was unconscious having a Erpc for miscarriage at the time. Since having it fitted I have had some heavy bleeding and cramps but nothing worse than a heavy period. Thus can last up to three weeks. If you are not getting yours fitted for a few weeks I will be happy to update or look in my journals x

I'm supposed to be having one fitted (don't have to decide until the day) next week, but waiting for my period, they want to fit it straight after (or during, yuck!). I've heard the Mirena bloats you up? But then I'm worried about the heavy periods with the copper. Does the copper give you regular periods?
I'm not looking forward to having it fitted but it can't be worse than labour, right?!

Katy, getting the IUD in is nowhere near as bad as labor. I thought it hurt like crazy but only for a few seconds. Then I was cramp for about a day.
