Has anyone heard of this? My coworker just told me about it today, so I looked it up. She told me that apparently white baby boys' lungs develop later. So, it is even more important for them to be born as close to the due date as possible.

I have never heard of this before.

Ummmm.. . never heard of this 'syndrome'
I couldn't help but to google it just to see what would come up . .. and that is nothing. . . only message boards mentioning it much like you are here. . . additionally there is no reputable source that I can see that even hints at lung development being tied to race or gender. . .
URBAN MYTH!!!

She said her doctor told her about it. Apparently, when she was pregnant, they needed to deliver her earlier and were going to at 36 weeks, but they did an amniocentesis and found her baby boy's lungs weren't developed enough yet. So, they waited until 37 weeks to deliver.

Anyway, I just thought it was odd because I never once heard about it before. I would hope it's an urban myth.

Its a new one on me too, not saying theres not such a thing but am sure someone would have mentioned it to us pregnant girls before now?

never heard of the "syndrome" but it has been proven that little boys lungs develop later than little girls....

one of my friends just had her son at 36 weeks and although he was almost 9 lbs and 20.5 inches long he had trouble with his lungs and had to go to the NICU for a week....

It is known that girls develop quicker. Gender is taken in to consideration but overall the baby's and mother's health will determine early induction. I believe that a girls gestation is considered a week or two a ahead than boys overall. In saying that, a lot depends on the size of the baby adn the placental flow prior to delivery etc. Often big babies need interventions with respiratory problems regardless of gender.

My first boy was born at 35 weeks and I was given steroids to help his lungs. He was 5lb8oz on delivery and was able to stay on the ward with me. My antenatal room mate (we were both on bed rest : ( had her wee girl on the same day via c section and her little one was in the NICU for three days. A vaginal birth was essential in our case. Her baby weighed more but the section was not as useful in preparing baby's lungs.

im jumping from 2nd tri but my best friends mom is a NICU nurse and she said she has noticed that white boys usually have the hardest time in the NICU the girls usually develop faster and tae to treatments easier....not sure about the syndrome though

Maybe somebody just gave it the word syndrome because I can't find any medical website where a syndrome is verified. But it's interesting that boy's lungs take longer to develop.

i dont really know how to say this without offending any1 so please dont take it that way but she said "most of the time, the african-american baby girls do the best" and the white boys have the hardest time..... so weird. i dont think it actually has a name

I was an RN in the NICU for several years. We didnt actually refer to it as a syndrome, but often heard "wimpy white boy." Worked in 3 different NICUs in 3 different states and heard it at all three. At that time it was also suggested that when it came to preterm babies "African American baby girls" oftened did better. Dont know if there is data out there to support this.

actually i was in the hospital the other night for preterm labor and they asked what i was having and I said girl. the nurse told me there are some type of statistics that involve that. For example she said that African american girls are the more likey to be able to be born early and survive, and white boys are the lowest in that for some reason. So apparently bc I was having a girl she was better off? Idk completely about this.

It isn't actually a syndrome as others have said.....just has to do with their development. There are statistics that do support girls do better than boys when born prematurely and then that African American babies fair better than Caucasian babies. So white baby boys statistically are at the bottom of the totem pole....

I actually have heard of this... my sisters son was born at 32 weeks and was in the Nic unit for about a month.... the nurses there referred to them as "wimpy white boys". Of course her little guy was only 2.7 pounds when born, and did perfect, no oxygen needed and basically stayed there to gain weight... and is a very healthy 4 year old now... So yes alot of people do say that, but not sure how much its actually true :)

Sounds like a load of bollocks!!!!

We are all human and made up of the same anatomy, male and female differenciates/defines us generally speaking.

Tell your co worker....."Loulou said....bollocks (cheesy bollocks)!"

Xxxx

I thought there was lots of evidence that pointed to men as the weaker (genetically/survival-wise) of the two species in general though its quite obvious when dealing with preterm babies..
Makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint... one male can make more babies than one woman (and needs to survive only long enough for insemination/conception where the woman is needed until the baby is weaned etc) so it would be more important for the females to survive.
Not saying thats true in all cases, but we had to develop genetically stronger females in order to do well as a species. Thats just my very non-scientific analysis anyway.

ive not heard of it and think its probably a half truth in that as many posters have said that girls develop faster than boys i doubt it has much to do with race though (i could be wrong)
