Hi there

Quick query.....

I have been reading some of the posts people have put on here and am noticing that everyone seems to be having appointments at different times. (1st tri). I understand that sometimes someone only just realises they are pg later on, and only manage to make appointments from say 9 weeks on....but how is it that so many doctors don't do scans until certain times. Some women have said they have had theirs at 6 weeks, some earlier, but yet our surgery's midwife doesn't normally see ladies until they are 8 weeks (according to my doctor).

Why can't they all stick to the same hymn sheet?? It would be so much more reassuring! xx

I think its very much dependant on whether you are low or high dependency, when you find out, how quick you are to book an app, how busy they are, where you live etc etc etc....i totally understand what you saying though it is a bit wierd!!!xx

I know what you mean, my doctor said I won't see a midwife until 12-14 weeks. It annoys me as this is my first child so I would like the support of a midwife, especially in these early stages! Xx

Because everyone is different! lol... I have had 2 scans, and am 12 weeks, yet I have chosen not to see the midwife until after my third scan (the 12 week one which i am having tomorrow). I have had early scans due to my history (which is the case for most areas) They also take into account problems, i.e. bleeding, pains etc.

I believe that generally my midwife team don't see people prior to 8/9 weeks because of the high rate of problems prior to this point.

I think early pregnancy scans are generally only offered if your pregnancy is considered 'high risk' - i.e. if you've had miscarriages in the past etc. But yes, the care and timescale of appointments differs in each PCT which is annoying! I'm in a different area to when I was pg with my son, and I'm not being offered the same scans etc - very annoying!!

Different appt's and scans are a result of your 'risk' status. With my first pregnancy I didn't see a dr. until 8 weeks or so and didn't get a scan until around 10 weeks.

But, with this one (since I had a m/c in June), I had an early scan at 6 weeks to confirm the pregnancy was viable.

So risk status, and the country one lives in, are the main things that determine appt.s :)

Each person is different :) Also, some are considered higher risk due to age, previous miscarriages, etc, and hence will be asked to go in for early scans. In addition, those who go through fertility treatments will also have many early scans to monitor the growth and viability of the embryo/fetus.

Hi
A lot of ladies on here have earlier scans at EPU's after bleeding, cramping or past miscarriages etc, so it does seem like everyone has earlier scans.
I know round by me the very first scan would be at around 12 weeks unless you're high dependency or you have the above issues, but you can arrange a booking in appointment with the midwife as soon as you find out.
It is odd that it seems to differ place to place though.

Thanks guys, yeah I understand it's due to the timings and things, but I think all women should be entitled to a scan at say 6/7 weeks to reassure them. Even if you are not in the risk section, the timings still differ.....Odd indeed lol! xx

In the US you generally only get 1 scan in your whole pregnancy , and that's at 20 weeks!

Oh my goodness, that must be scary?! 20 weeks....Oh I don't think I could cope lol x

I'm getting my first scan at 6 weeks. When I called to make my appmt they told me they wouldn't see me until I was 6-8 weeks. I used clomid and know I had 3 eggs this cycle so I'm anxious to see if I'm having multiples. 6 weeks feels like an eternity but I guess I should be grateful! Sounds like some people have to wait a lot longer.

I first seen my midwife at 5 weeks, and again two days later, because im considered high risk due to my 2nd tri loss in march, anemia, and knee problems, and also had a early scan at 7 weeks due to loss, and should be getting another scan next week, everywhere is differant, but it usually just depends on circumstances x

I lost count at 13 scans for my last pregnancy, how many you get depends on your history and your risk category. It would be great if everyone could get the same amount but there just isn't the money there.

For me I had previous surgery to my fallopian tubes so I always get a early scan to check baby is in the right place. The rest last time were because my baby wasn't growing properly and was going to be preterm.

Its very annoying isn't it. I won't be getting my "12 week" scan until next Monday so by then I will be 14 weeks. I seen the midwife for the 1st time when I was 10 weeks though. Everyone else seems to have got their scan before me though and always at 12 weeks :(
