Winding your child

Hi everyone, baby Kaia was born last Friday the 29th October and at first we found it quite hard to wind her. I spoke with my sisters on this and a few year back they had read, the UK is the only country in Europe to wind their babies. Two of my sisters said they never winded their kids and had no difficulty what so ever. It can be difficult to get all the wind out of your child and if it is possible that Kaia can do this on her own accord then it would mean no pain. I stopped winding 4 days ago and have not had any problems, she is bringing wind up and seems to be more settled but today my partner spoke with the Midwife and she said she has never heard of this and we should wind our baby.

I feel if we do this then Kaia will not be able to do it on her own and will depend on us to do it for her. If we dont do this correctly then Kaia might end up with colic or something worse.

Has anyone ever heard of not winding your baby?

i havnt heard of not winding your baby. And as for your baby always depending on you to bring up wind if you do burp her, do you still need winding? I dont. It only takes them a few months to learn how to do it by themselves. My baby is sick if i dont wind him properly. But each to their own x

Kaia was sick when I winding her, however since I stopped she manages and is not really sick, her weight is back up to birth weight and everything seems fine. I dont want to make a mistake and have her in pain but so far she is managing her self. With no pain or discomfort

if i don't wind sarah she will be sick if i lie her down and cry (a painful cry) i seem to be really bad at winding and struggle to get her to burp.

in saying that, she doesn't seem to need much winding during the night and doesn't dribble her bottle as much - i wonder why this is?

follow your own instinct, only YOU know if your baby needs to be winded or not

I have never heard of not winding, if we don't burp LO he cries because of the pain.

ive never heard of not winding ur baby either? i wind ryan twice, half way through his bottle and the end of the bottle if not he would cry with the pain of not being winded xx

Yeah I have heard of this. My MW said in USA they don't do it either. I had a friend who said what she did was lay her baby on his back for about 15 mins after a feed and then when she picked him up he would just do a massive burp. I have taken to winding Frankie half way through, then at the end I lay him across my knee on his tummy and 9 times out of 10 when I pick him up he burps all by himself. I'm not very good at the whole back rubbing thing so this works well for me. He is still a little sick and sometimes seems to have gripes but no more than when I was winding him for ages.

I'm in the US, and everyone I know burps their babies. I have never heard of not doing it, since most babies become extremely fussy if they weren't burped properly during/after a feeding.

back home in Italy it's not done and my parents are always puzzled when I wind lo :haha: its true that not many places do wind babies, I find it helps lo so I do, but I don't think he's in any danger if I had decided not to :flower:
