wondering if my baby has down syndrome epicanthic eye fold

I think I'd find another doctor, tbh. It's not right that they're causing you so much worry. Your lo looks fine to me!

My DD's eyes looked just like that. She is a perfectly normal and healthy five year old now and the bridge of her nose is more developed.

I don't Think she had them as a small baby either. I'd say by the time she was about three they were less pronounced. I'm sure when I was reading up about the NIPT I read somewhere that there has never been a baby born with DS after a negative result. It's pretty unlikely that you would be the first one!

Oh wow I didn't know that. I did know they said it was 99% correct.

I wish I could find the link, but I'm sure I remember reading it, it said that they can't claim 100% reliability because in theory there could be a false negative, but in actual fact it has never happened yet. I did a lot of reading up about this type of testing as it was expensive and I was undecided about whether to have it or not when I was pg.

Thank you so much for telling me this. This give me lots of hope. Did you get the testing done too?

So welcome - being a mum is so hard whether it's your first or your fifth: we all love and worry the same! I've worried about everything from day 1 and it sucks, and I hate seeing other people go through that. This place is definitely reassuring when you find other people who are feeling the same way. :hugs:

You are so right meep. I worry about everything. Its very hard being a mom and the more kids you have the more you worry:) I love my kids so much. This is such a wonderful forum. Thank u so much for caring:)

Yes, I had the testing done at 20 weeks as my DD had short femurs on the scan and I googled and it was a soft marker for downs. She didn't really have short femurs in fact, as short femurs really means something like below the 3rd percentile and hers were on the 30th but I got all neurotic about it because I spent too much time on the internet. The test really gave me peace of mind so I'm glad I did it. You really can be very confident that your DD doesn't have DS if your NIPT was negative. X

What are the eye concerns? I cant see anything? Looks like my eyes!

its called epicanthic folds. Its wear some skin goes over the corner of the eyes. I have read though that a lot of babies have it and once the bridge of nose grows it goes away. My lo was not like that when she was first born. It came around month 4.

I have a daughter with Down's syndrome and your daughter definitely doesn't look like she has it!!
My eldest also has the epicanthal eye folds and she definitely doesn't have Down's syndrome.
Its one common physical feature of ds but there would be other more obvious things like low tone and delayed milestones that would be picked up.
Try not to worry, she is perfect

Thanks so much for replying. Would you say my daughters fold prominent or light ones? How about both of your sweet ones? The doctor said her tone was great and so far she is doing great on her milestones. The doctor said she doesn't see any more markers except she sticks her tongue out a lot but she said that was a tricky one because some babies just like to do that or she could have a bigger tongue and grow into it. She said shes had babies grow into their tongue too.

Both of mine have it (admittedly I do have a chinese great grandfather so that might be why) and they definitely dont have down syndrome. In fact before this thread I had never really noticed

Just because all down syndrome children have the epicanthic eye fold certainly does not mean all epicanthic eye folds have down syndrome.

I think you need to stop fixating on what was probably a throw away comment about down syndrome. You have had a test and it was negative and now she has two markers that a lot of other babies that dont have.

Delayed tone and not meeting milestones would be much bigger red flags.

I can hardly notice the folds on your girls eyes. Children with Down's syndrome usually have almond shaped, slightly upward slanting eyes as well as the folds which your daughter doesn't have.
I see a lot of babies and children with Down's syndrome so I can recognise the facial features easily and trust me your girl does not look like she has it.
Enjoy her exactly the way she is! X

One of my boys is forever putting his tongue out, I just put it down to him being a cheeky monkey, which he is. Your daughter is gorgeous and I really can't see anything to be concerned about X
