Hi all. Hope you're all feeling well. I just had my NT1 scan today, I am 13 weeks 1 day, and the nuchal fold measured at 2.1mm. There was a nice nasal bone, which gives me some relief, but I just feel like 2.1 is kind of high.

Also, when I go back in a month, what do they look for then? Could the nuchal fold get bigger? I had the materniT21 test done today and will have results in 7-10 days. I thought I would have some more relief after this scan as everything else looks good, but I find myself worrying still!

Any input would be greatly appreciated!! I just want to relax and enjoy being pregnant. Oh, I'm 43, which is why I'm so paranoid! TIA!!

If you have the money, I'd def recommend a Nifty test. It's 99% accurate for downs without the risk of an amnio.

Good luck xx

Hi, not sure where you're from but in the uk they wont remeasure the NT after a cut off point (13.6w I think) because its no longer accurate or representative of anything. My lo's measurement was 3.3-3.5mm, my risk factor is 1:45 with clear blood results (not a materni test we don't get them as standard here just bloods to check for the hormome levels). The cut off here for 'high risk' is 3.5mm and above so I don't think you have anything specific to worry about with your lo's measurement but obviously babies can have syndromes without an enlarged NT just the same as an enlarged one can mean nothing. I know its an anxious time, the nasal bone is a good thing and that's really not an 'enlarged' figure so there's nothing to suggest you do have reason to worry. I hope the wait goes quickly for you.

I think the MaterniT21 is the same thing and it's 99% accurate.

Thanks for responding!

Thanks kmumtobe! I guess they measure other things at the next scan. I'm going to just try my best not to worry. Thanks again.

Easier said than done I know. Our next (and final) one here is 20 weeks and that's a full check of the anatomy, organs etc but you'll have your results by then wont you so hopefully you'll know you're in the clear. Good luck!

My little man's NT was 3.1 at 12 weeks and he looks absolutely perfect. The fact that there is a nasal bone present should really ease your mind. I did a lot of research about the subject and getting an NT between 3-3.5 only raises your chances of abnormalities by a few percentage points. So instead of having a 98% of everything being ok, his NT measurement have me a 94% chance or something similar. So an NT of 2.1 is nothing to worry about...though I did read a study that said chromosomally normal boys are more likely to have higher NTs at 12 weeks, so it could point to gender ;)

Oh and about the possibility of the NT increasing - it decreases after 12ish weeks and is therefore only a useful marker for possible issues until that point. It could grow if it was something called a cystic hyrgoma but that's extremely unlikely and I think would probably be showing up as a much larger NT than a 2.1 if it was.

My DD had a 3.4mm nuchal. We had a cvs and detailed scans. All came back clear. She has DiGeorge Syndrome. Trust me, its not the end of the world. Someone told me the same thing when I wasasking the same questions as you. I didn't believe her. Now I know its true.

Good luck hun. If it turns out that your baby has something going on, which is very unlikely, you will cope.

Thank you both so much. Your responses have given me a lot of relief.
Crunchyjenny, it's funny that you mention gender because I have a pretty strong feeling it's a boy. And HBGirl, you're totally right. If something were wrong, I would cope. What is DiGeorge Syndrome, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks again ladies! :hugs:

DiGeorge is when part of the 22 chromosome has been deleted. It is a spectrum disorder so has many ways of manifesting. With my DD hers presented as subglottic stenosis and coloboma. She wears glasses to correct her vision and has a tracheostomy. These are al short term so she will live a relatively normal life.

My favorite quote still remains: define normal.

My NT scan measurements for the twins were 2.1mm and 2mm - got my letter one week later say both babies in the 'low risk' group (i'm 36 and was worried about my age too!). My two were also measuring ahead - I KNOW i was 12+4 weeks - both babies measured 13+4 and 13+2 - so i was close to the cut off as well for their measurements x

So glad you're low risk. That's great! My ob office will call me either way but I'd rather get a letter like you did. Less nerve wracking I suppose.

What does it mean if your baby measures larger? I was 13 weeks at scan and baby was measured at 13+4. Not a huge difference I guess. Could've been the way the tech measured.

Thanks for responding. Happy and healthy!!! :flower:

I don't think it means anything measuring a week ahead at that stage, just got some good strong babies growing in there :) Midwife doesn't even know my due date has change yet - see her Tuesday. Will be interesting to see what stage they are measuring at my 20 weeks scan in 3 weeks! x

Hope you hear from your OB soon and you can have your mind put at ease, your measurements are absolutely fine  x

I think at this point, measuring large just means your baby is growing fast. Mine measured exactly right at my 10 week scan, and measured 13+1 at 12+5. I guess it's just like kids, they grow at different rates. I believe dating scans are only really accurate for so long, and even then there's a margin of error.

NT measurements under 3 are "normal," according to the internet and the genetic counselor who talked to us at our NT scan. I wouldn't worry about 2.1 with a nasal bone, it's well within the low risk range! The NT measurements aren't accurate after 14 weeks or so, so if you're having a scan in a month they'll be looking for something else.

My measurement was 2.1 and my letter came through today with odds of 1 in 32000

At the 20 week scan hun they look at everything it takes about half an hour and they don't miss a thing every organ and measurement I had my little lady's scan on Wednesday so try not to worry they will check baby anyway :)
And 2.1 doesn't sound high to me

I think I got 2.4 for this baby. It worried me as I had 1.6 for my previous baby so it seemed like a big jump. My little dude is fine though, my letter came back low risk and absolutely nothing showed up on the 20 week scan other than a very active little boy. 2.1 is perfectly within the normal range, I promise :flower:

I was 45 when I got pregnant and bc of that I saw a genetic counselor and a perinatologist, and was told anything under 2.5 was good. I had the MaterniT21 test bc my age alone put me at a very high risk for trisomy 13,18 and 21. All came back fine though. Seriously, I don't think 2.1 is high, although I understand your worry. Hope you get your results back soon so you can relax. Mine came back in 8 days. Good luck.
