Hi,

I've got an ulcer on my eye & yesterday was prescribed 2 lots of eye drops. I told the consultant that I was pregnant & she said they would be ok to take, but I've looked on the internet & that says they're not recommended for pregnancy unless deemed absolutely necessary.

The eye drops are called exocin (ofloxacin) - I put 1 drop in every hour, and mydrilate that I put in 3 times a day.

Anyone know anything about it?

Also, when does the placenta develop? If that's not developed yet will the drugs in the drops be able to get to the baby?

Hey Ellie did you tell your doc that you were pregnant when you got these?

Yeah told her & she said they'd be ok. She was gonna give me some cream too but wasn't sure if I could use that when pg so didn't give it me. I shouldn't have looked on the internet but stupid me did & now I'm worried!! I'm back at the hospital tomorrow & I presume I'll get told to carry on with them for a week or so, so I'll doublecheck again. I've been ttc for so long that I don't want something as stupid as eye drops to ruin it for me.

Hi, sorry I can't offer much advice but I would wait till you see them again and just double check if you are worried. I hope all goes okay and that it clears up soon. Take care  XX

ah i wouldnt worry. checked the online leaflet and they just say you must tell your doctor and not that you cant take them. I have had a serious ulcer like this before where i needed masses of drops but the risk is minimal to the baby and if you dont sort your eye you could loose some vision. Its definately more important to take the drops!

Thanks for looking it up for me. I know she wouldn't have given it me if it could do any damage, just can't help worrying. Maybe my baby will come out with really good eyes!!!

lol think you gotta take omega3 for that but you never know!

I'm having kind of the same problem right now...I'm on three different drops for an inflammation inside my eye. I know it's really scary to read what even eye drops might do to our babies. However, my eye doctor showed me that if I put my finger in the corner of my eye when I put the drops in it will close up the tear duct and not go down the back of my throat which means that less medicine will get into the system and it will basically stay right on the surface of the eye. And since you don't really ingest much anyway when you use eye drops, if you do that everything SHOULD be okay. Good luck!!

I used over the counter eye drops during my pregnancy, my OB said it was fine (as was topicals) because they don't enter the bloodstream

otc topicals ? I hear "retin a" topical and a horror story to take when pg. I mentioned this twice today for some off reason lol. Not to scare anyone. Yes, most OTC stuff is not too bad. Just the asprin, advil they say no to now.
