I have had recurrent BV for a few years now, and it is usually treated with a course of antibiotics.

Well I now have it again and have left a message for my Dr to call me tomorrow.

I am really worried though as I have just done some Googling (Google doesn't normally scare me!) and it says that BV absolutely needs to be treated in pregnancy due to the risk of preterm labour and other complications.

The problem I have is that because I am only 5 weeks how can I be given oral or indeed vaginal antibiotics?

I am worried that if I don't have the antibiotics it might cause complications, and that if I do I might miscarry

Does anyone have any advice, or has been in this situation at my stage in pregnancy?

I don't know for sure but they must have a safe way to treat it, try not to worry.
They might want to swab you to make sure it's defo that before treating you? x

(But if u've suffered for years you're probably right) x

I hope they can do something which is going to be safe.... I hate it that I get it constantly anyway, one Dr told me it's because I wash too much!!!

Yh, I get it too, the reason - I wash too much!! Pah! That did make me chuckle! I havent had it since being pregnant so not entirely sure what happens.. PIf you do find out Please pass the info on for me!! Hope it all gets clearewd up xxxx

Hi
have a look into Active Balance (it balances the ph levels) - google it. They might suggest this instead or maybe you could if its suitable for pregnant women?
I found out about this from the doc at a clinic, when i had BV once in the past. So i bought it in case for a prevention, but havent needed it since.

Oooh I shall have a look, thanks for that :)

I just feel absolutely sick sat here thinking about it all :(

I'll go and see if I have the instructions still for it...it should tell me..brb xx

sorry its called Balance Activ
Its a vaginal gel..it says and I quote from the leaflet enclosed...
It can be used during pregnancy and menstruation however , you should see your doctor if think you may have a vaginal infection during pregnancy.
It carries on but I think the answer is to talk to your doctor who will prob test for it first and then maybe you could talk to the doc about Balance Activ??
Hope it works!
xxx

Oh thanks so much love... when she rings tomorrow I'll ask her about it. How long do you have to use it for, does it actually work? lol

And can you get it on prescription?

I really think you are worrying yourself silly over this. I am sure the doctor will be able to treat you for it with something that is perfectly safe. I think you risk more by taking something without talking to a doctor. You are so early on, i reckon the risk would really only be if you were at the latter stages. x

Read this, it says that they can prescribe you with safe antibiotics. xx

and this in particular :

many women with BV have perfectly normal pregnancies. And up to half of the cases of BV in pregnant women resolve on their own.

BV needs treating in pregnancy. Some GPs are happy to prescribe oral metronidazole, others will give vaginal pessaries with the same drug. Either way, its safer than leaving untreated. You will be fine, dont worry. :winkwink:

btw - they will probably want to confirm with a swab. If you give any treatment in pregnancy you want to be sure it is indicated. Doctors are very careful about what they prescribe in pregnancy xx try not to worry, this is very common and easily treated.

ps I am a doctor

I havent used it before, i had it once some time ago when i wasnt preggers. I bought it but havent used it.
Like I said in a prev reply post; Talk to yr doctor, cos most of us on here aren't doctors so are in no position to advise. We just share experiences and try and help!

Thanks for the link, will have a read, but I really am not worrying myself without due cause.... I literally get this every 2-3 months and it's a nightmare. Every time I take the antibiotics it goes and although it gets rid of it, it never stops it returning.. it's a complete pain in the arse to to be truthful lol

And at any stage in pregnancy it needs to be treated... I cannot take normal antibiotics either as I get horrendous thrush which causes me to bleed terribly.

I am going to suggest the Balance Activ to her and see what she thinks about it all.... if she wants to come at me with the swab and the dreaded speculum, so be it... I'm ready!

Thanks for your help ladies x

Totally understand the thrush, its a nightmare. I only have to sniff an antibiotic and I get it. I suspect she will want to confirm it, if positive then treat then try keep at bay with the balance activ (not heard or used this but suspect will help rebalance the Ph and try prevent recurrance).

Avoid perfumed bath products, shower gels, feminine hygiene products (I am sure already preaching to the converted as you have been through this sooooo many times before!!).

You may find however that it may not trouble you too much later on when the hormones really kick in, the pregnant body often looks after itself!

Dont worry and hope you find an answer that you are comfortable with , good luck :flower::flower:

ps she might not use the speculum as you are pregnant, just a quick swish round with the swab:wacko:

Thanks for that :)

I have been told just to have plain baths, no babywipes *down there* but was told showering with normal shower cream was ok... do you also think this is a no no then? Only I need to be able to wash with something! lol

Thrush is just horrendous isn't it, the last time it was awful, I spent the whole time in the bath swishing cool water around the area to get it all to calm down :dohh:

Looks good to me :)
