we are really worried about our newborn, he is 1 week and 1 day old, he has been quite upset today - he is on SMA, 2oz every 3 hours, he is only small 5lb 15 at birth.
We have given him a couple of bottles today and he has just brought it back up - just sick down his babygrow, not projectile sick as the midwife called it. it is just white too, he also has a real sore bum which we are putting bipanthen on but it seems to be quite sore, he seems to be pooing constantly, as in you take his nappie off and he just poos and you wipe and he continues, seems to be straining and lifting his legs, we have called the midwife tonight and she has said it sounds normal just keep eye on him but we are so worried, has anyone had this before or any tips please?
many thanks,

I'm certainly no expert but I too would be worried.
I'm not sure how things work where you live but when I was leaving the hospital with Grace the post natal ward said if I had any concerns over Grace or myself that they were there for us until she is 2 months old. It may be wise to give your post natal ward a ring and see what they suggest. I will be keeping everything crossed for you. :hugs:

Thanks for below, we have contact them and they said it sounds normal and no concerns, just try and get him to sleep as he may be tired, but we are first time parents so just worried...

my lo is 2 weeks 2 days and our first night home this happened to us. he was also on sma at this point. i rang unit n they said it sounded normal, but i was worried and took him up there after the phone call. as soon as i got to hospital and doc looked at him they took him straight down to intensive care and he had to be put on a drip as he was allergic to the milk. he had to stay in for 5 days but fine now. not tryin to scare u hun but just sayin if ur worried, trust mothers intuition!!! x

It sounds normal to me. Some babies are just sicky babies x

Hi Hun, sorry to hear you are so worried, I understand what its like when its all so new and things happen you dont know what to do.
I would say if you can get hm to sleep in between some feeds, he seems ok in other ways except the pooh then early tomorrow morning demand to see your Midwife (as I assume you would still be seeing her after only a week) If not an HV.. It could be something like lactose intolerance or just has a little upset tummy, or absolutely nothing, I dont want to speculate but the liklihood is that its nothing too serious and you are doing everthing right! If you cant get through to a midwife contact your gp and as your baby is so young ask to have an appointment that day, its not fair you worrying about your bubs.. Im sure everything is ok, my little baby goes thorugh periods of constipation and the runs, for the first few months the digestion does not work that efficiently as its all so new.. Hope everything turns out fine, hugs x

Try not to worry too much hun. But i'd call up again and tell them you want him checked over. For him to be upset, sick at every feed he's taken, sore bum and having problems with poo i'd be want someone to take a look. I'm sure he's fine, but always best to be safe and have him looked at.

Call the ward and if they have no one to look at him go to your out of hours doc/emergency health centre xx

trust yourself, if you think he needs checking over, make somebody do it... That way if something is wrong it can be sorted and if its all fine you can relax a little :) the first few weeks/months we panic about everything and thats normal and just fine. Nobody will think your being silly or overreacting, they will think your a loving caring parent that wants the best for their child. Xxx

The pooping sounds normal, my LO pooped constantly, especially after feeds or when i was wiping his bum as this stimulates them to poop.

2oz every 3 hours might be a bit much for him at a week old, my LO was also sick occasionally or spat up when burped. during the second week we stopped doing routine and did feed on demand. this worked out a lot better and hed sleep a lot better too.

but if you are worried take him to a doctor or hospital. because as someone above said, it could be more then just normal 1 week old stuff.

Thanks for all the messages, he is doing good this AM, think he was just exhausted, he has had 4 bottles since the note last night and kept them all down, 2oz each one so that's good, he is still pooing a lot, and on demand when you wipe him but as above think its due to him being stimulated, his bum is still a little sore but hopefully that get better, thanks again for all your helpo, midwife is coming out monday unless it gets worse xx

If the sore bum continues maybe you could try a different brand of nappy? My lo had a sore bum when he was born for weeks and it wouldn't shift.. I got some different nappies and it went straight away, it turned out he was allergic to something in the other brand. He used to always poop in the early days too, its calmed down as he's got older, he pood on my hand on a few occasions lol.

Give sudocrem a try. Not all brands works for all babies. Took us a while to find the right bum cream :)
Hope you manage to get him sorted xxx

This happened to Holly at the same age! It only lasted for a day but I was so worried about her, she was so sick that it was coming out of her nose. I ended up calling the doctor out to her and she turned out to be fine, but I'd always rather get her checked. Glad he is feeling better this morning x
