A Brazilian woman found out she was having a two-headed baby just moments before she gave birth, after doctors initially told her she was having twins.

Maria de Nazare gave birth to the Emanoel and Jesus, who share the same body and weigh 9.9lbs, by caesarean at Santa Casa hospital in Anajas in the northern state of Para on December 19, the Daily Mail reports.

The 25-year-old mother, who has three other children, never had any ultra-scans during her pregnancy and only found about the shocking discovery when she had a scan before the baby was born at 1am.

The scan revealed Emanoel and Jesus had two brains and two spines but shared one heart, lungs, liver and pelvis.

Santa Casa director Claudionor Assis de Vasconcelos said at no point did the mother appear distraught that her son had two heads.

"On the contrary, the baby was received with much happiness by the family," he said.

Mr Vasconcelos said the new mother was breastfeeding both heads and looking forward to taking her baby home.

She was flown to a specialist hospital in the state capital Belem yesterday for further tests and is expected to go home later this week.

Medical experts said they were not considering the possibility of surgery to remove one of the heads.

"If both brains are functioning, how are we going to choose which head to remove?" said Neila Dahas, also a director at Santa Casa.

Oh wow, that's amazing! I swear I remember seeing a documentary about two American girls who shared one body and they lived a normal, happy life. I hope these two little boys do too. I feel uncomfortable that the article says the lady's son (singular) has two heads, in my opinion as they both have functioning brains, she has TWO sons that share one body. I can't believe the possibility of removing a head was even discussed! xx

I agree they may have one body but two functioning brains means two little individuals right there.

If it was me id refer to them as my sons and wouldnt allow anything that could harm either of them if possible x

That actually makes me want to cry, they are beautiful little boys but what a situation to be in :( x

I'm so happy that the babies were accepted with love :cloud9: how could they even think of "cutting off one of the heads" it's not just a head...it's a baby!!!!

the only thing that makes me sad is that the babies might be treated unkindly growing up  but I hope they have a very happy and healthy life :hugs:

"the mother was breastfeeding both heads" both BABIES ffs. it's not a 2-headed baby, it's conjoined twins. :nope:

how could they possibly have missed the fact there was only one heartbeat?!

it says she didnt have any scans throughout her pregnancy until she was just about to deliver them - so maybe she didn't get seen by proper midwives at all? x

I find the whole situation incredibly sad. She would not have had the care in pregnancy we all take for granted. Without routine scanning there would be no way of knowing what had happened.

it annoys me they are saying 'two headed baby' ..........its so wrong..........its two babies ...........how sad...................they cant possibly remove one of the heads...?

there are two girls abigail and brittany hensal who share one body similar situ.

They make it sound like an alien when it's two individuals! How sad though, I really hope they can have a healthy life xx

inspiring!

I read this and thought the way they refer to them was shocking a two headed baby!! Makes them little boys sound like a mythical creature. They are two little people sharing one body, they will have their own little personalities. The media makes me sick at times :nope:

such beautiful replies. has brought tears to my eyes. when im not on my phone ill watch the vid of the girls. The media referring to them as two heads is awful i agree:(

There has been many cases of this over the years and nearly all of them led happy productive lives

They are two babies sharing one body. Not one person with two heads

That video is very touching. I really hope those boys are able to live as normal a life as possible.

My OH and I were watching a documentary about conjoined twins on Discorvery H&H last night and we were discussing what we would do if we had conjoined twins. And I honestly don't know how I would react. There was one mother on the show who apparently couldn't even touch her son when he was a baby; her mother had to do everything because she couldn't bring herself to :(

There was another boy who had a parasitic twin growing out of his abdomen. He had 8 limbs, basically, although 4 of them technically belonged to the twin. The twin had no head or anything; just limbs, genitals and a bowel. The parents had the twin removed because it was affecting the health of the child, and afterwards they were saying things like "our child has become human now" and "now our boy is beautiful". It just made me so sad, because it's like they didn't think their child was human or beautiful before :nope:

Nowadays though many conjoined twins can be separated; obviously not in this case though. But in this case at least they're facing the same direction etc, and so they will be able to have a good quality life together. It's harder for the twins that are connected by the brain and they're facing opposite ways and one has to sit on a wheelie stool. I don't know their names, but they're very well known.
