Well i live in essex and for years there has been a well known traveller (gypsy) site about 20 minutes from where i live and i have never heard or come across a Romany or Roma there are lots of names like; Charleine, Chardonnay, Cheyenne, ect I thought Roma/Romani was more gypsy boys tbh but i have seen that name a few times on here lately and never once thought of gypsys. I guess it depends where you live too if they are common near you..

there are romany gypsies in my area so that is all i can think when i hear the name! however it is very pretty and if you can get over the association then i say go for it! however be expecting some people to say 'like the gypsies'

Yeah its so annoying cos I love the way the name sounds and think its really pretty so I dunno! I don't think its a name travelers really use for their own children I thought it was more the old fashioned name for travelers in general but I'm not sure :/

It is a language as well as the name of one of the main groups of travellers (gypsies) ie it's the name of an ethnic group. It is also a girls' name, so there is no reason why you can't use it if you want to.

Or what about Romy? That is quite a popular name here.

yes it is a type of traveller, the old fashioned romany gypsies!

i LOVE romy! like romy and michelle's high school reunion haha!!!

Another variation is Romana which is quite cute. I like Romany and although I do associate it with Romany Gypsies, it wouldn't put me off x

I prefer romana or romy, all I can think of is Romany gypsies and although I don't have a problem with travellers I would get annoyed with "like the gypsies" comments that you are bound to get.

Or Romilly is quite similar if you decide you don't like the association.

I'm kinda put off by it, I don't really mind the name but wouldn't want my daughter to hate me if she didn't like it or got made fun of at school with it.
If you watch the movie Ted, you'll change the way you think of girl names forever lol... They start rhyming off "white trash" girls names and there are a few traveller-esque names in there ;)
We went to great lengths to name our son something that couldn't be fun of that easily. Giving them a questionable name is making it too easy for othe kids if your kid doesn't turn out to be all that popular.

There is also Ramona - which reminds me of the children's books about the funny little girl Ramona Quimby

Hi! I have the same issue. I hardly like any female names. I've decided to look to the Bible for clues :flower:

I actually kind of like Esther, even though it sounds old fashioned but I think it will come back.

Have you thought about the name Rowen? It's fairly close to Romany, and I'm fairly sure there's no negative associations to it. :flower:

I really like Romany! It does remind me of Romany gypsies to an extent but I don't think that should put you off - Romany culture is quite interesting if you look into it; I don't see it as any different to naming a baby Sahara, Inca or any other place/people name for example.

In fact when I hear the name I think of a very beautiful woman with long hair classically beautiful features. Lol. Love the nickname as well, Roma is really cute and takes the quite grown up edge off it for a little girl in my opinion.

Do think you'll get a few people drawing the comparison between the name and gypsies but at the end of the day the same could be said for any name - "Oh, as in the flower?" "Her name is just like the song!" etc, people will always find something to compare a name to, more so if it's unusual.

If you like it, I say go for it! :)

why not Rona or Rhona instead.
similar sounding but not so literal in translation
