Hey Ladies.

I've just had my 1st consultation for ICSI and it was a shocker! Basically we were referred to this hospital for ICSI - my last hospital carried out all the tests to ascertain this was our next step so we thought we were going along to get ICSI underway.

Anyway at the appointment the consultant who I found really cold and quite frankly not interested had none of the test results so had to ask for the other hospital to fax over my DHs SAM results which they did - both tests came out with 2% morphology but apparently this isn't conclusive enough and he wants a 3rd sample done. Then he said he wants me to have 2 blood tests and the scan...again. I had all of these this year already! He wants us to go back in 3-4 months for next consultation and if he decides we are eligible for ICSI he will add us to waiting list which could be 6 months. So what we have done today is basically what we did back in March this year at out first FS appointment - they ordered the tests and told us to go back in 3-4 months...why are we doing this again?!

I have since called the hospital and spoke to his secretary to explain how unhappy I am so just waiting for them to call me back.

I just wondered what other peoples experiences have been on their 1st consultation after referral? Maybe this is normal and I was just expecting too much?

I'm so sorry you had an awful appointment. I don't understand making you wait 3-4 months only to maybe put you on a waiting list.:dohh: Can you try a different Clinic/Dr?

Hi Cui, Thanks for your reply xx

Trouble is we are going through NHS so not sure what choice we have. The Dr is calling me back tomorrow and if I am still unhappy then I will go back to first hospital to ask what my options are. It's not really getting us off to the best start with this Dr if I don't feel very comfortable with him!

You must be so disappointed :hugs: I just don't understand why he is making you wait again xx

Hi Slinky,

Our 1st appointment was the same. All quite brief and about having the right blood results etc. Afterwards I realised it had been about applying for funding. We weren't specifically told this but when I spoke to the receptionist afterwards she said that once we have out funding approved we can book again for the initial consultation. It was basically form filling and questionairres. How long had we been ttc etc etc

It may be the same at your clinic. Where are you at? It wasn't made clear to us initially that the 1st appointment was to apply for funding and I remember feeling a bit disheartened at how brief and uninterested the dr was.

Hope you get some answers back from the clinic. We had to wait about 3 weeks before we heard back that we had been approved for funding.

Good luck

Hi caline,

That's really interesting and I wonder if that is what is happening to us then. They should just say that's the case!

We were at Guildford hospital but now going to St Richards in Chichester.

So after you had to re-test did you have to wait another 3-4 months to just go back for another consultation? x

Following the initial appt for funding application I think it was about 6 weeks until the next appt where we had scans, Sa's and trial embryo transfer. We also had to attend an open eve where they give all the info about IVF etc. From the initial appt it was 5 month until I started IUI, which got cancelled.

I'd ring your clinic and ask if the initial appt was about getting funding.
