Hello,

I have just come back from me 20 week scan and thankfully no anomalies were detected which is a great relief.

I just have one concern though. Baby's growth was all within the normal parameters, but its abdominal circumference was on the higher side of normal, where as its head and femur sizes both showed as either in the middle or just on the lower side of normal.

The sonographer said everything was ok, but did mention the abdominal size and asked if I am having a GTT (I am at 28 weeks as my BMI is higher than normal).

Obviously I am now worried I have gestational diabetes!! I have had my blood sugar taken at 14 weeks and I have my urine tested each appointment and nothing has been said so far. But I know these things can develop quickly.

Basically, what I am after is a little reassurance - has anyone had their baby's abdominal size to be higher side of normal but not developed gestational diabetes? What signs should I look out for of GD??

I am a worrier by nature and this hasnt helped.

Here are baby's measurements as of today (I am 21 weeks and 5 days pregnant);

Head circumference 189.5mm
Transcereballa Diameter 21.4mm (What is this???)
Abdominal circumference 177mm
Femur Length 37.1mm

Any advice??

Transcerrubellar is across the cerebrum (part of the brain).

My boy is on the upper limit for all the measurements at the moment, but so was my daughter who is now the size of an average 4 year old at 17mths! And has a rather large head like her daddy!

Try no to worry about these measurements. I am surprised the sonographer said this to you. SOMEONE has to have a measurement on the upper end of the average to MAKE the averages?

If you had a scan in 6 weeks for example, you may also find that the measurements all start to match up more. But if they dont? No need to worry:hugs:

My baby's abdominal circumference at 16 weeks was 101mm, which I think was like a week or so ahead. I'm not worried about it. I have no risk factors for diabetes, have low BMI, and eat healthy. I could be wrong, but I think babies just grow at different rates.

Thanks, I am probably worrying over nothing. But now I have it in my head I have increased thirst....lol!!

I dont think I would worry if the other measurements were also above average, but it just seems out of proportion - bigger than normal tummy but normal head and legs. Maybe it just takes after me and my OH!

Has anyone else got any experiences to share??

my girl was high measurements for everything and she was born 1 week late a healthy 9lb 6 :)

dont worry hun if there was any cause for concern they would have dealt with you there and then :)

Thanks, I guess so !

I was just talking to my mum and she was saying when I was newborn, I had a big abdomen and she kept taking off my baby grows to show people. Maybe it is just genetic! They didnt have ultrasounds then, so this was never picked up.

I am just paranoid about developing GD, but I have heard exercise reducing the chances of getting it by 50% and I have been swimming 3 times a week for 2 months now, so hopefully that will help
