20 week scan - echogenic bowel - scared **Update**

Thats good news! Hopefully the next scan will show its gone :)

I had DD in the delivery suite and she had poo'd on the way out I had to go to the ward - they let DH stay for about 1 1/2 hours then threw him out and told him to come back the next day (he went home and couldn't sleep at all!), visiting was an hour for daddys only in the morning, 2 hours in the afternoon and 2 hours at night - it really sucked and I had to stay 2 nights. Hopefully this time I will be discharged within 6 hours if this little monkey doesn't produce meconium stained waters!

I know its a bit crap.
Our wards normally have about 6 beds in them, so its not private. I think this is why they don't allow the partners to stay.
The birthing suite is individual rooms with their own tvs, beds etc which is why I want to go there.
The downside is that the only pain relief you can have is water birth and gas and air so im hoping I can do it with that alone! ha x

I def see the appeal to doing the birthing center. Our hospitals have individual rooms. I wanted the midwife experience but convenience and safety for just in case moments!

Kudos to you for your first kiddo! I'm too much of a chicken!

Our birthing centre is midwife run, but it is literally 2 minutes away from the delivery ward so if there are complications, no progression, or I cant hack it and want an epidural they transfer you haha xx

Thats so crap isn't it, its bonding time!
Dan said he will sit in the car if he got asked to leave, of course the MIL was full of no you will come to our house, I had to jump in and say if he is headed back home (we live in the same village) he is going to OUR house to see to the dogs instead of me getting my parents to do it! ha x

Great news about the testing! Hope it all clears up by next scan.
I work on a postpartum unit which is in a new hospital and our policy is the same for semiprivate rooms, I have no idea why they didn't just build all private rooms so dh's could stay the night. Again, big motivator to go the birth centre route for me too... And the early discharge!

Glad you've had good news, hope everything is clear at your next scan and you can just enjoy seeing your lo again.

On a separate note do you know for definate that your OH cant stay with you in hospital? Im in the uk, and the official visiting hours are 8-8 for partners but they dont enforce it, they can stay 24/7 if they want. Thry dont get a bed or food or anything, but oh stayed with me all night when ds was born. Might be worth checking just in case.

I heard in some nhs hospitals you can pay for a private room, but they are few and far between. might be worth an ask though hun!
I heard a rumour that the german hospitality I'll be giving birth in has communal birthing rooms, I REALLY hope that is a lie!!!

Yeah, my hospital does this. I think it's quite expensive - about £100 - but I'll definitely be paying up if there is one available.

so glad to hear the good news about your scans, and I hope the next one is even better! :)

re: hospitals - do you not have an option to pay the extra and get a private room? I know that's what we have here in Germany. They prefer you to stay 5-7 days here, more if you have a C-section, so I'm looking into all options as I choose which hospital or birthing centers to give birth in. My midwife is a native English speaker who has worked here a long time and she explained that all hospitals have a team of midwives who are on duty and work with the doctors on duty. So there is no either-or here at the hospital, you get both in the room (from what I understand).

I asked about the private/semi-private difference when my husband had a big surgery last year.. It's 10 euros per day in the hospital for semi-private, but the privates and larger family rooms are 50-70 euros per night. Even if I'm there for a week seems like it's worth paying for!

My mind is boggling a little at the cost difference between German hospital stays and US stays. I'm not quite sure how it breaks down per night, but its like 10k for 2 night stay as part of a 'normal' labor and delivery. I don't know if many hospitals here have semi-private anymore, most rooms are private as far as I know. Insurance typically covers 80% of that, so you end up paying around 2k. I know the exchange rate ends up favoring the Euro right now, but holy cow - that is a pretty big difference!!!!

It's definitely one of the reasons I'm happy to be living here while we have this kid! My husband was in the hospital twice last winter - each time the stay was a week because he had a major surgery and they preferred he remain in the hospital under their eye rather than having to return should something happen during recovery. We liked that, too, since he had brain surgery and there are all kinds of potential complications! It was a bit of a downer that I couldn't stay in the room with him - semi-private, so I had to leave between 8-10PM each night - but then, our total bill at the end of each visit was 70 euros. The surgery didn't cost anything outside of the insurance that comes out of his paycheck each month as part of tax (which is a few hundred euros).

As for pregnancy and the baby, it's kind of crazy when I talk to my friends and family in the U.S. about the level of care here. I think I've had five ultrasounds so far - they check every time or every other time I go in for a check-up. We have something here called a "Mutterpass" which we carry with us that records everything. I switched my doctor a few weeks ago and all I had to do was bring it with me. I see a doctor every 3-4 weeks and a midwife on the non-doctor weeks; my midwife will be doing post-natal visits as well. That's all included in the insurance. I only have to pay for the fine diagnostics tests and extra scans (e.g. I did a second 12-13 week ultrasound + extended bloodwork for down's at a specialist's office, after going to my doctor for the normal 12 week scan, and I had to pay about 120 euros because that wasn't included).

That's great news about your baba! Fingers crossed for you that it's gone by the time you go back!

You've made me paranoid about hospitals now, I'm gonna check what facilities my hospital has! Not having OH chucked out if me and baby have to stay in! I'm hoping I won't need a c-section or anything so it'll be nice and easy but I'm starting to actually think about labour now and really worrying that something will go wrong or that I won't be able to do it which will complicate things.
I'd double check with your MW about the facilities that your hospital provides though, whether they have private rooms that you can get etc.

You have a private room for the actual birth (as standard I assume) but after delivery and a couple of hours you get moved onto the ward where there are other patients.
Its because of the other people on the ward that people get thrown out its so people can sleep if they want too and not have to worry about strangers walking about I guess! x

Hi I see this is an old post but was just wondering if everything was ok with the echogenic bowel?
