any one thinking about booking 3d/4d scans?? im thinking about booking one for about 16-18 weeks for a joint bonding and sexing scan. found some places that are not to bad for price but does any one know any where that is realatively cheap in england?? (northwest area)

Don't know anywhere cheap as I'm in the US... not sure if/when we'll get it done.
I have a feeling our parents will probably offer to pay for one though LOL!!!

They kind of look creepy sometimes, but I'm assuming I won't mind when its my child... I do also like the idea of being surprised to see what baby looks like.

Not sure yet, lol... I'd want to do it late enough that we'd get to see some neat stuff though!

I will absolutely get one. Got one done with my daughter as well and it's truly amazing. Not sure how they do them outside the US, but I got mine done with her at 28 weeks and even that was a bit early, the quality and what you see in the pics over here is at it's best around 30 weeks. I'll get this one done at 30 weeks.

Ours was $150 and my parents got it for our Christmas present :)

Just wanted to comment that "medical professionals" do not recommend non-medical ultrasounds.

Below are links to the SOGC and ACOG guidelines regarding this issue.

We're going to do one around 24-25 weeks.. it'll be just before christmas so that'll be our christmas gift to ourselves :cloud9:
Im so excited!!

It just sucks that there's only 1 around here in the area, the cheaper ones are like at least 1,5-2 hour drives.

The one that we prolly will go to is about 20mins from our house and its like $175 , it includes:
* 30 minute 2D, 3D/4D session with registered sonographer
* 4 black & white thermal photos
* 1 CD containing 10-15 color images
* Gender determination upon request
* $50.00 discount coupon on a second session of $175.00 or more

Im so excited.

Hehe, ok, I just found it a little amusing that they say doing a scan for psychological reasons is not valid... then state that psychological distress is a reason not to do a non-medical scan (in the case that an abnormality is detected). So psychological distress is a bad thing, but not a valid reason to go get an ultrasound outside your doctor (if they won't give you one?).

The contradiction amused me.

Personally I'm more concerned of the potential physical effects. But it's a personal choice (just like immunizations :dohh:) I was just sharing the medical recommendations in case anyone was interested in what the "professionals" want you to do....

Shhh! don't bring the 'I' word in here, lol!!!

Very helpful links of course. I was just amused at how the medical world treats psychological stress... that its not important... but wait its important etc....
Seen so many girls worry themselves into a knot of stress yet their doctors won't even run their HCG levels because its for 'psychological' reasons... etc

Oh.. and my friend's baby had a growth on its face... she had to get weekly ultrasounds for the last 6 weeks of her pregnancy... the growth was benign and removed a few days after birth... not sure if I'd rather know ahead of time and worry, or be devastated when my child was born.

I worry more that people rush out and get 'certified' because of the money to be made with 3D/4D scans and aren't properly trained or experienced etc.... I wouldn't personally worry about 1 extra ultrasound (though the length of time they scan for is a concern since they often go longer than medical scans will).

I just wanted to point out that even medical ultrasounds cannot be completely reassuring... They miss 20% (and probably even more) abnormalities. One woman I knew had 4 ultrasounds in pregnancy and none of them discovered that her baby had a cleft lip. I know of another baby who was born with transposition of the great arteries. A normal ultrasound does not mean a normal baby.... Just like a live baby on ultrasound doesn't mean a live baby 5 minutes later. Sad but true.

And that's one of the key reasons why many health care professionals won't rush women out for ultrasounds for reassurance....

Just wanted to let everyone know that 4d's are a luxury (at least where I am at) and for me it was a great, amazing and fun experience. Our daughter came out looking just like the 4d pic and it was neat to have a sneak preview. I think it's a shame that throughout pregnancy we have to be ridden with fear and told we "shouldn't do this and should do that' kinda stuff. It's supposed to be an amazing experience and an enjoyable one at that. I say go for the 4d!

Agreed! :thumbup:

I'm deffo going to be having a 4D scan. a little bit later on though. I'm going to have a gender scan at 16 weeks ;)

Nearly everyone I know has had these and there hasn't been any problems so I won't be taking any notice of what these socalled " professionals " say as its all textbook rubbish! If they were THAT concerned I'm sure there would be a lot more warnings about these and I've never seen or heard one :thumbup:

Also...I REALLY dont mean to sound funny, This is just IMO....BUT I think its a bit wrong to be so negative and post links up which would cause doubts for people...Why burst bubbles?! If anyone was concerned I'm sure they would ask!!

:hug:

These "so called" professionals are the governing body of all obstetricians and gynecologists of North America. They are the ones that dictate how all obstetrical care should be managed to ensure the safety of all mothers and babies involved.

If someone posts a thread about 3D/4D ultrasounds, a discussion about 3D/4D ultrasounds is what they're gonna get. I don't think posting links to the medical recommendations regarding these types of ultrasounds is wrong. People have the right to be informed... Whether or not you heed to the concerns is up to you.

What I find amusing about this whole thing is that when professional agencies put out statements recommending herd movements towards things like mass immunizations to protect babies the majority of people follow suite whereas when those same agencies put out statements advising against recreational ultrasounds due to potential hazardous effects on fetal brain development the majority refuse to buy into it because they deem the pictures as being of greater importance.

I dont get it. So high risk pregnancies that get more ultrasounds are putting themselves more at risk? :shrug:

The benefits must be weighed against the risks. It's a very simple concept which is applied to many many things in the medical field.

If the risk of not doing the ultrasound is greater then the potential risk of doing the ultrasound then the ultrasound should be done... If there is no benefit to the ultrasound there is no point in putting that baby at increased risk.

i've actually looked at risk prior to deciding i wanted to get the scan done, as im diabetic there are increaased risk to physical development of my baby which can be seen with more detail in a 4d/3d scan so in reality the benifits of having one of these sccans will be outwieghed by the risks. appearance of my baby is not important to me...its my child and i will think the world of him/her no matter what...i am greatful that people are concerned with both risks to baby and worries/doubts that can come from posting links but i must ask please dont argue, the natural worries cause enough stress and to read people having a go at eachother is stressfull to read....THESE THREADS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE UPLIFTING/FUN/SUPPORTIVE NOT BITCHING...thanks ladies x x x

Thanks, that is really interesting and a bit concerning really because my midwife told me today I probably won't be getting a scan until 13 weeks.

I am pretty impatient so I rushed out and booked a private scan for this Sunday. I just can't wait! having seen this though I feel guilty about squeezing in an additional scan just because I am impatient!

UK Cath - if your private scan is still with a medical professional, then part of the concerns in those articles don't apply. I wouldn't worry about 1 extra scan done by a medical professional. We do them much more frequently here in the US... earlier scans and more than 2 in your whole pregnancy etc.

I do think that the NHS and resources plays a part in why you UK girls often have to wait so long for your first scan.

I wouldn't kick myself about it if I were you... just my opinion.

Thanks Lisa.
I have been so jeleous seeing you US girls with your early scans, I really couldn't wait any more, I have to see the little fella!
