Hi,
Im just putting this out here for my sister really: her 6 day old baby is drinking nearly 6oz every 3 hours. Theyre also having trouble getting him to sleep at all & having major problems with wind (both ends!). Travis was totally different to this, so i dont really know what to say to her. Does it sound like a lot of milk to you? He's on SMA. :flower: He weighed 7lb 4oz at birth

6oz?? That is a huge amount for a 6 day old. Some babies will drink far too much as it temporarily relieves their gas pain and then makes it a lot worse. Is he getting sick?

There is also a growth spurt between 7-10 days.

As for sleep, if it's gas, they'll need to work on getting the gas out of him (bicycling, burping). He won't sleep if he's in pain. If the gas is out, I suggest a swaddle.

Thats double what most babys take at that age. Niamh sometimes strugles to take 4oz some feeds at nearly 4 weeks old.

Can i ask what the baby is doing to make her feed him that much? She could be getting his hungry signal's mixed with something else and his body is having trouble digesting that amount of food, giving him gas and making him uncomfortable so hes not sleeping.

I dont think he's being sick, she hasnt mentioned it. It makes sense tho if eating too much can temporarily relieve gas pain. I'll tell her to swaddle him! :baby:

i thought about that too, but he isnt snacking eg he's not feeding a couple of oz every 1/2 hour: he goes a steady 3 hours between feeds & then has between 5 & 6 oz at each one. I thought it was a lot: my baby's nearly 6 months & only takes 1oz more than that!
I hope that sorting his feeding out will help his sleep: cant make it any worse! I wonder if its too early for hungry baby milk? Shall tell her to ask HV.

Does he cry if she feeds him less? Is that how he got up to 6oz?
