Hi there,

I've EBF our LO for 6 months now and really new to FF. I have no idea what to give him now though? I have a couple of Aptamil 1 cartons I'd like to use up but after that I want to buy more of what would be best?

I know it'll be a case of trial and error to start with maybe but don't even know where to start!!!!

Is Follow On Milk just a marketing gimmick and I can just use First Milk? Or are people being cynical? I really have no idea

Thanks ladies

The NHS guidelines state theres no need to change from first milk. It has more nutrients in it :)

First milk is fine. There is no need to change especially if your baby is happy on first milk.

If your baby isn't currently formula feeding I'd suggest a follow on milk. Nutritionally not that different but you can get offers on them.

I BF for 7 months but we'd started 1 bottle of formula at 4 months. My LO is still on Aptamil 1 (9 MO) as there is no need to swap from 1st milk and I knew he got on well with it. However if he was over 6 months when I started I might have gone straight onto follow-on because of the option of offers. Its quite hard to change over from 1 milk if you know you're LO is happy and settled on it though...

Only thing i might say is that there is more iron in follow on so some babies do get constipated and changing from BM to FF can cause this as well so I'd just make sure it gets introduced gradually as you wean down BF...

ETA: I definitely wouldn't go straight to hungry baby 1st off. if you try either first milk/follow on and find your LO is taking massive quantities really frequently then it might be something to consider....

I was in the same boat, and went to first milk. Two months on and I'm going to move him to follow on. I went with first bees m because we had only started solids and he wasn't eating much. It had taken us this long to get him to comfortably take his bottle and we are now dropping the rest of his bfs one baby one.
