7 week scan - anyone know what to expect?

Hi ladies,

I've got an early scan scheduled for Friday. I'll be 7 weeks and 1 day by then. I'm so so nervous as I lost my last pregnancy at 6 weeks (although I didn't know until 11 weeks). So, the last time all they found was an empty sac.

Now I'm petrified that I'm going to see the same thing. Or be really disappointed if they can't find a hearbeat.

Has anyone had a 7 week scan before? What should I expect? Trying to prepare myself for every possibility at the moment!

I had mine at 6+5 and saw a little hb flickering away - it was a relief.

I went in with my heart in my throat - imagining to see the same as last time - but we didn't and it was great.

I had a similar situation with a mmc, and was petrified for my first ultrasound. I was 7+5, and the tech could see the hb transabdominally. But, the clinic has a policy of transvaginal when it's earlier than 8wks. They might not be able to do it transabdominally that early for you, so don't panic if they switch methods!

just try and stay positive !! i had a m/c at was 5 weeks with my last pregnancy i am now not too sure how far gone i am, they think 6 weeks ive got a scan monday to see if my baby has a heart beat as they couldnt see it just think positive and deal with the bad if and when it happens you can spend your life worrying over things that might or might not happen although its hard think the best!! x x

I had a scan and she put me at 7+2 - it looked like a little kidney bean with a hb flickering away.

They can most likely detect a fetal heart beat by that stage in pregnancy, unless you arnt as far as long as you think you are. I had a mmc last pregnancy and doctor booked me in for my first scan asap and than after that turned out good he booked me in for another scan 2 weeks after my first. If its too early to really detect anything maybe ask your doctor to book you in for another scan in another couple weeks to make sure things are going ok. Im glad i have such a good doctor and had me in for another scan soon after the first, it really made me feel a lot more comfortable this pregnancy. I have cryed at every u/s so far!

gd luck and i'm sure it will b fine.. i had the same thing happen to me and had a erpc at wat i should've been 11 weeks but i found out at 6 weeks it was going so very wrong! but i was pregnant in july and am now 10 weeks+1 today.. and i saw my lil pip at 6+5 and then again at 9.. finger crossed, keep us updated :O) x

Hi ladies - well, yesterday was a rollercoaster of emotions. I woke up and convinced myself that I had started bleeding (it as so faint, I think I may have been imagining it!). So then I was totally convinced that I was miscarrying again. But we went to the hospital and began to prepare myself for the worst... But there it was on the screen, my little sticky bean! We even got to see it's heartbeat flickering away!!!!! Amazing!!!! I cried with the relief of it all!

Now we just have to hope and pray that this one sticks around! Stick little bean, stick!! The consultant said that now we had seen a heartbeat, that there was a significantly reduced chance of a miscarriage - between 5 and 10 percent. So that's very good news too!!!!

Great news! Seeing that hb is such a relief. Yes the risk is very, very low once hb is detected.

Here's something I posted earlier:

After the embryo attains a CRL of 5 mm, the probability of subsequent loss falls to 7.2%. The loss rate drops rapidly thereafter to 3.3% for embryos with a CRL of 6 mm to 10 mm and to 0.5% for embryos with a CRL of 10 mm or more (ie, 5 weeks postovulation or 7 weeks after the last menstrual period).
