Hello,
My wife and I visited the doctor for her second U/S today. She is currently (12/27/2012) 8 weeks since her last monthly period. At her first U/S, which was done just shy of 6 weeks since LMP, the nurse could not find a gestational sac. At today's ultrasound, which took place 2 weeks since the previous one, the gestational sac was clearly visible, but it *appears* to be empty. After the U/S, the tech had us then go (drive across town!) to meet with the doctor--who was not in the room while the U/S was being done. the doctor told us to expect a miscarriage. My wife (and I, of course) are devastated, but I have lots of questions.
1) I watched the tech do the entire U/S, and, although there clearly was not a large fetus inside the sac, I could not conclude clearly that it was empty. Is it not possible that the tech simply did not see it because it is still small?
2) Given that the sac was not visible 2 weeks ago, and is now visible, might this simply suggest that the pregnancy is progressing slowly--or that our dates were simply off? My wife's HGC levels have been progressing normally...
3) My wife is very petite (under 5 ft tall, and 94 lbs). Couldn't this also make it slightly more difficult to detect things at this point in the pregnancy?
4) The doctor recommend that my wife stop taking prometrium and wait to miscarry. Am I right to doubt that this is good advice at this point? Why not just continue taking it and see what happens in the next week or so? What is the rush?
Any insight would be enormously appreciated! Thank you for your time!!!
