We have just put Sophie onto formula for all her feeds. She was born 13 weeks premature and had expressed breastmilk for the first 10 weeks, then I was breastfeeding then when we got home I was breastfeeding and having to top up with formula.

THe last week or two, for various reasons, she's been getting mostly formula and I've been expressing morning and night. I was only getting 40ml each of these times. I have now decided to put her fully onto formula.

My first question is, has anyone gone onto formula feeding from breastfeeding and if so, what did you do about stopping bf/expressing? I thought that with producing such a small amount it might not be too difficult and I didn't express at all yesterday but this morning I was really really sore and my breasts were rock hard. I ended up having to express for relief and expressed 90ml total. Is it best to keep expressing a bit, but less often or cut it out altogether and deal with the discomfort?

My second question is, what should formula fed babies' poo look like?! Sophie's poo used to be kind of yellowish but when I did her nappy this morning it was really dark coloured, almost greenish...is this normal?

Hope someone can help!!

I only got a week for bf, but what is happening with your boobs is normal. If you want to stop expressing, then just stop, wear a tight fitting bra, this will help dry your milk up and stop them moving too much and causing pain. Make sure you got some pain killers handy just in case too, will take a few days to dry up though. As with her poos, that is quite normal with the change of milk, my dd also had that happen when i stopped bf, wasnt for long though, my mw explained it was normal too.

i was only able to BF properly for a week or so but still give Freddie a morning and a night feed from the breast. The milk is minimal now and i just stopped once i realised it wasnt working for him.

Poo wise, sometimes his are green sometime chicken korma colour. Green can be sign of a windy tummy! but yes formula does tend to be greener. I have freddie on Aptamil comfort and it is maily giving korma poos ;-)

HI Hun,
Sorry to hear that you have problems, I also expressed for 6 weeks and then went over to formula. Beginning I used SMA and that made LO poo quite green then switched to aptimel and her poos look just like the BM ones, just smellier, sometimes she is bit constipated and that makes her poos bit greener.
Regards stopping I just went cold turkey with savoy cabbage leafs. It really works I promise.
Good Luck!!!

Hiya doll
I just expressed until my breasts felt a bit better, just dont empty them. It took a few days but i felt better after a while.

Alex has rainbow poos :)

BTW I thought I would add - I still get a few drops of milk out of them, nothing to cause me discomfort though. Mental.....

Ella was breastfed 3wks and again I just went cold turkey. Overnight things turned uncomfortable, I knew it would. I remember last time the discomfort.
The things they forget to tell you about breastfeeding!
The pain continued for a week, gradually getting less. I didnt express any. If it came out it was only due to leaking which was really bad in the morning.
The leaking continued for about 3wks. TBH I was glad to stop feeling like a cow!
Ellas poo went from v runny with 'seeds' to runny still but greener, minus seeds on cow and gate to quite green and soft on the nutramigen.
Luckily no constipation yet.
