Ok, So this is my 3rd baby and as I've now found out no pregnancy/labour or in fact baby is the same!!! So, where I'm feeling I should know this, I guess no-one ever really "knows"!!!

My dilemma.

When DD was born last Tuesday I had her on C&G starter milk, ready made as the hospital don't provide milk. She seemed fine although she did only have half a bottle. Back home later the same day she started being a bit sicky, I put it down to the milk possibly and switched her to C&G comfort figuring i'd stop a problem before it started. When the midwife came the next day she told me she wasn't actually being sick it was mucus which made sense as it wasn't milk she was bringing back. So, I started making her 3oz bottles as 2oz comfort 1oz stage 1, no problems, she had been taking 3oz comfort so made sense to drop one oz to stage 1. Then yesterday after she had her mid bottle wind and had carried on taking her bottle, which again she drained, I sat her up to wind her and she vomited, quite a bit considering. Then of course shortly after wanted more milk so i made her an extra ounce. Today all day she has drained all her 3oz bottles and tonight (just now) has been searching on my shoulder as if hungry. In the end I decided to make her an extra ounce of stage 1. She downed this and then as soon as i sat her up to wind has thrown most of it back up.

I have found that at night time when I go to put her down in her moses basket at night she is very difficult to settle so I gave her a dummy last night (i'd spent over 90 minutes trying to get her to go to sleep) the dummy settled her and she did her regular 5 hour sleep. I have now just given her a dummy and she is now settled with the dummy.

So, my question - if the stage 1 wasn't agreeing with her would i know with the 1oz in her bottles or not? Does it sound like she has just been greedy or just didn't really want the extra ounce?

I had thought about upping her milk to 4oz tomorrow and adding an extra scoop of stage 1 then slowly dropping the comfort but now i dont know what to do for the best... She's only a week old and 4oz seems a lot...???

I want to do the best thing for her but right now I don't know what that is... I may try her with a 1oz comfort 2oz stage 1 tomorrow day and see how she goes and try get her off the comfort. At least then i'll know if it is the milk or just greed. Maybe that will be the only way of finding out???

Any advice much appreciated and sorry its long...

Hey there.

Personally I wouldn't have switched to comfort milk so early on BUT as she seems alot more settled when she has the comfort milk over the regular C&G I would be inclined to keep her on it. It is suitable from birth so it should be fine to have her on the comfort indefinatly (until switching to cows milk at 1 if needed). I wouldn't mix the first milk and comfort though, just give her 100% comfort.
Also with the hungry issue, as Comfort milk is alot easier to diegst, it will stay in her system for less time than regular formula, meaning that she may get hungry quicker. If she is wanting 4oz bottles then I would give her what she wants, and as long as she is keeping it down and not gaianing excessive amounts of weight, its fine. xxx

My child did that. She would mistake stomach pains for hunger and then throw up. She has reflux. We onlly feed two ounces and give pacifier as she likes the comfort of sucking. If she is really hungry she won't take the pacifier. As for the formula I don't know as we have different kinds here. Mine is 3.5 months and has gained tons of weight and has really chunky thighs.

Thank you for the replies.

I am kind of wishing I had held out before trying the comfort now to be fair... but I was trying to eliminate a possible problem before it arose to sick all over!!! I'm going to guess now that had I persevered that wouldn't have been the case anyway...

DD was fine through the night and had her usual 2oz comfort 1oz stage 1 mix at 3am then slept til morning so this morning I gave her 2oz stage 1 and 1 oz comfort mix and she has been absolutely fine. Burped before I got her sat up as I didn't sit her up immediately, not ages, just 10 seconds or so and then she was ready to continue her feed... I think the problem last night was that she had wanted the comfort of sucking and the fact that I offered the milk as opposed to a dummy tipped her after having her fill of 3oz....

She was weighed on Sunday and weighed 8lb 8.5oz, her birth weight was 8lb 11oz so she is re-gaining from the meconium loss well without it being too fast.
