You screamed at one and two AM
You screamed at three and four
You trashed the toys in Wilko
Then you rolled around the floor
We had old ladies staring
As you kicked and hit and cried
Another mother tutted
And I felt I could have died
But I bundled up your body
As it tensed and wailed and shook
I left behind the trolley
And just you, my baby, took
The half a mile journey
Back to safety and your bed
I planted little kisses
On your very sweaty head
The thrashing made your wellies
And your hat fall to the ground
It must have been around ten times
We had to turn around
But as I fought to keep you safe
And keep you close to me
I let go of all other things
But getting you to see
That I will always love you
That I'm always on your side
That when your cries are loud and fierce
I will not run and hide
I'll silently provide you
With a nestbox for your pain
I'll keep my steady pace up
Even as it starts to rain
Your sobs begin to lessen
After half an hour or more
And now you've ripped the houseplant
Into bits along the floor
We made it back together and
My back rests on the wall
I tell you that I heard your
Giant feelings, and you're small
I'm going to scoop you up now and
Lay down your little head
And pray that while you're sleeping
I get time to go to bed
