Today, I received an Ultrasound... to find out something that I was worried about from the beginning since I'd had it once before, and that's the possibility of a blighted ovum. I'm a bit distraught and my Dr is checking my HCG levels over the next 48 hours to see if they double or not but still...

The only hope I really have right now is that I'm not cramping, I'm not bleeding and I still feel completely pregnant (tired, sick, hungry all the time, strong sense of smell etc) The news came as a shock and I'm still trying to make sense of it. This happened to me before, over 6 years ago, and the same thing happened, I was 10 weeks and there was nothing but my doc was different then and didn't check my blood levels, just scheduled a D&E for the following week! Even then I was not bleeding or cramping, everything seemed okay...

So now I was researching to try and wrap my head around this before deciding which way to go...

I want to believe so much that I'm just way to early or something's just in the way and they can't see the baby...

I've heard that having a tipped Uterus actually makes it much more difficult to see a baby until much later on (around 13 to 16 weeks) Is that true? Does anyone have a tipped Uterus and had trouble locating the baby in their ultrasound?

Another thing... if their really is no hope, is it better to do a D&C/D&E or miscarry naturally? If we do lose this pregnancy we want to work on getting pregnant again as soon as possible... When we had our D&E the last time, I became pregnant with my daughter just two months later after BD just one time, we didn't even time it really... but was this because of the D&E or just luck, we really have no idea, we've been wanting to think it was because of the D&E but I really haven't looked much into it.

Thanks for any answers girls, I really appreciate them :)

I have a retroverted uterus (backwards) and the nurse has told me it is more difficult to see baby via a ultrasound when looking through stomach until uterus grows.
That's why when I had an early scan (6w+6) they did a transvaginal ultrasound. That worked and she could see baby and even looked at my ovaries.
Maybe that type of ultrasound would work better for you too?

We had that type actually, it's typical for this early. They don't expect to use a regular ultrasound over the tummy until at least 20 weeks. I'm glad they were able to find yours though :) Good news or bad I'd rather hear what my chances are then get my hopes up over something that might not be.

I was 10 weeks at my last appt, and they were able to see the baby with an abdominal ultrasound. Once you get to 8-10 weeks, you're HCG level should be sufficient to use a transabdominal ultrasound. At 9 weeks they should be able to see something in your uterus, especially if t was a transvaginal ultrasound.

I have the same uterus problem .had transvaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks and there was no problem finding the baby it was so clear and i saw my baby's heart beating so u should get that type of ultrasound

I have a tilted uterus and it's made it *sorta* hard to see baby. The tech has to stand and kinda twist the probe around which is super uncomfortable (transvaginal ultrasound). I had a blighted ovum also at 10 weeks. I chose to have a D&C.. didn't know they did D&E's so early on. But I would always prefer to have surgery rather than miscarry naturally if I were to ever again. It's a personal preference, but I just think it's less traumatizing, I suppose /:

I've heard the chances of having another blighted ovum is >10%. So don't give up hope just yet. I'm keeping my fx for you and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping you see bubs soon! Xx :hugs:

I haven't had my us yet, but I have a tilted uterus and it made it very hard for them to find the heart beat with a Doppler.

You could always try going for a second opinion before doing the d&c. Even if just to make you feel more confident.

A tilted uterus does make it difficult in some cases to see things, but I'm not so sure about early on. I imagine it's possible that it's harder for them to find anything at all, but usually I think it's more an issue of just getting a clear picture before the uterus has popped up. I had a scan at 10 weeks because of some bleeding and it was easy for them to see baby and the heartbeat with just an abdominal scan even with my tilted uterus. At 13 weeks, I had my usual dating scan and they had to do a transvaginal scan because, while they could see baby just fine, they couldn't get quite the right angle and clarity to do the CRL. You're still quite early though, so it's hard to say how that might affect you, and it might just depend on the severity of the tilt as well. Hope you get good news soon though!

With a transvaginal ultrasound, you should be able to see everything no matter what type of uterus you have. Also, having a tipped uterus is pretty common, and any OB could handle a patient with one.

I'd definitely do a D&E. It's faster, there isn't much bleeding, and you'll be able to start trying again sooner, rather than waiting around. Also, it will get rid of your symptoms instantly, so no more head games. Before performing a D&E, your doctor WILL do an ultrasound, but schedule an appointment for a repeat ultrasound before hand anyway, just so you can see with your own eyes and you don't have to just trust that the doctor did it.

Good luck. I realize how difficult this must be. I feel for you. I definitely hope you get pregnant again VERY soon.

Did you mean they do the ultrasound before the actual procedure of the D&E? Like when you're asleep? I'm only asking because with the first blighted ovum I had, there was no other ultrasound that I was aware of. I was very naive and just didn't know what to do so I didn't think to ask for another either before the procedure, but, however, should I choose to go with a D&E again I'm definately going to fight for one more at least.
