my baby my have this it can be a marker for downs etc but my nuchal measurement is good at 1.8 and the nasal bone is visible, they referred me to the fetal medicine unit and i have to have a scan in a weeks time as it may go back in to the tummy as i am at that stage where the stomach is closing over but we have to wait and see im thinking positive but even if there is an abdominal defect this can be corrected at birth with surgery i just hope and pray there is no chromasol problems as i am high risk due to my age im nearly 42 but saying that the nuchal measurement is good and the mw said tday thats good so all i can do is pray baby is ok

Back from Scan with a little worry... Pic attached!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Ladies

Had my dating scan yesterday... she put me back a few days, from 11+4 to 11+1 but saw a dancing, lively baby with a heartbeat!

Then the sonographer said that she was a little concerned as the baby's bowel (or gut) appeared to be on the outside of the baby's tummy. She said this is likely to be because I'm only 11 wks and said that she wants to re-scan in 3 wks to ensure it has gone back into the baby's tummy. The sonographer said there is a 90% chance of it going back to how it should be. Obviously though, I was panicked. I asked what would happen if it didn't go away and she said she wouldn't discuss it with me now, but I would be offered counselling... OMG! How frightened was I?!

I went in to see the midwife after a half an hour wait - the midwife had been running in and out of the room. She who picked up on this little problem in the notes (the sonographer had written "slight prominence of the fetal abdominal wall, patient very anxious"). The midwife said upon reading this, she had spoken to "those with the powers above" about the sonographer, who shouldn't have worried me like this. The midwife said it would be very obvious if something was the matter with the baby on the scan pic, and it isn't. Then the midwife said she'd asked 4 consultants what the scan pic looked like to them (there is a tiny shadow above it's tummy) and apparently, all of them said it was fine.

The lovely midwife then went and got the top consultant who explained to me and OH that when the baby is developing, the bowel comes out of the tummy, twists round to seal, and eventually goes back into the tummy, and that the chances are, that's what my bean will do - we've just caught it in the process of doing this. However, he said that in the event that this wasn't the case, my little baby would need a little op shortly after birth. There are other complications which may be the case, but he said I shouldn't worry me, and has fitted me in for another scan next wk (instead of in 3 wks - still a massive wait!).

I feel quite positive to be honest, have good feelings about my small fry, and the midwife said she would put her life on the fact that everything will turn out ok. Just obviously a little nervous now - that sonographer put the fear of god into me, especially with the counselling thing! We have been out tonight and bought some babygros - PMA!

Thanks for letting me spill x x x

Just to let you know, at 32 weeks and another four scans later (done by a consultant), all is good and baby is nice and healthy. The bowel went back into the tummy and they have kept a close eye and revealed no problems... i hope this is the case for you and i am sure it will be given no other worrying signs.

I think it can take up to 14 weeks before it is totally expected to be inside the tummy.

xxx

I haven't been through it but wanted to offer you :hugs: x

I had the same thing with my first pregnancy. They noticed the bowel ect out at 10 weeks scan i went back at 14 weeks and it was still there. I was told it could be normal and also warned of what else it could of been. I had to have an amniocentisis done at 16 weeks and the babys chromosones were normal... they told me everything would be fine.

However at a few more scans and after specialist appointments they decided that they would refuse to operate on her once she was born, they gave me the options of inducing me at 19 weeks and letting labour terminate the pregnancy or carry full term with them refusing to operate and letting her pass away. I chose the first option and it was terrible.

I was only 18 at the time and i really should of gotten a second opinion and fought for her more but i was so shocked at it all i didnt.

I dont mean to scare you however if the docs dont give you the answers you want make them.My loss only came down to money as the hospital didnt want to pay for treatment of her condition. Most babies are operated on and are totally fine i just obviously went to a crappy hospital with rubbish docs.

I wish you the best of luck :)
