advice on downloading music to burn cds please

hi, i've never dabbled in downloading music and the last time i bought a cd was four years ago...i only ever listen to the radio now as my collection is so old

which music site is best/easiest/cheapest which will allow me to listen to the music i download on my computer, transfer to ipod and burn to cds

I was concerned about itunes as whenever i use it to update my ipod it ends up wiping my music!!
