I've honestly had an awful week on Wednesday I had my glucose tolerance test, in between waiting I'd asked to see a midwife as I've been having trouble with horrible pain in my hips.

Well after speaking to the midwife she sent me straight to the physio department to see somebody there as I have a bad case of Pelvic Girdle Pain/dysfunction. They gave me a support belt and they're rushing me through the list to get me in next week, I was sent back to the midwife and she talked me through birth saying I'd not be able to be on my back and kneeling was a good position.

Then yesterday a midwife rings and tells me I've developed gestational diabetes and need to go in to speak to someone. I googled didn't I and now I'm worried about the birth of my baby.

I don't want an epidural if possible and would like to avoid a c section or induction (although if that's the safest for baby then I'll sign the forms) but everything I've read says ill be monitored more for babies safety during birth. Does this mean I'm going to have to lay on the bed? Because if I have to do that then I'm going to be in a lot of pain and more than likely end up with a epidural, and I've read that epidurals can (but understand not always) lead to interventions and c section.

Thanks for reading....I just don't know what to think or what to ask the midwife when I see her on Wednesday?

I just had my baby boy in August. I didn't have PGP, but I did have gestational diabetes. Have they discussed Non Stress Tests with you? I had to go twice a week for them. I also went for additional ultrasounds to check on his growth and check my fluid levels. In addition to this, I also had to check my blood sugar level every day. If my sugar was extremely high, I was told to call L&D so I could get an insulin shot. There is a diet they can put you on if you have gestational diabetes. This is probably what the specialist will discuss with you. I went for diabetes education where they supplied me with a meter, taught me how to check my sugar, and taught me about the diet I should be on.

My doctor did not want me to go past 40 weeks with my pregnancy and scheduled me for an induction on my due date. Fortunately, I went into labor 3 days before the induction. I didn't care about getting an epidural, so I don't know if your situation will be different, but I was monitored the whole time I was in labor. They monitored my blood pressure, the oxygen level in my blood, my heart rate, and the baby's heart rate.

My baby was still a little big despite the diet, but I didn't need a c-section. They did have to give me pitocin though because my contractions weren't as strong after the epidural.

I didn't have PGP either but I was nervous about being induced or having to have a csection with gestational diabetes when I found out I had it as well. they explained that GD can cause the baby to grow larger on top than on bottom and that's why they have you monitor your glucose levels - the problem comes when your sugar is too high regardless of eating the proper diet because then you may need insulin. If your sugars are fine then there is really not much difference except they generally won't want you to go later than your due date.

I'm due this coming Wednesday and am being induced on Monday and they understand I don't want an epidural and have no problems with that, I can birth in whatever position I want to.

So I'd say just talk to your mw and see what they say. Hopefully your sugars will be fine and all will be well.

Thanks for replying, im off to see a dr/nurse today so im going to ask everything thats flying round my head

My advice is to start going to acupuncture around 34 weeks to help your body and baby prepare for labor. Also be obsessive about your diet and eating right. There is some great information from Mothering Magazine and Midwifery Today magazine. You can find them on line and do your searches in their archives.
Go to a chiropractor who specializes in pregnancy and start doing some prenatal yoga. It really helps. I have some classes on the Yoga Download site online, but if you can find a class nearby do it. .
