I'm 22 weeks now, and just got the results from my boyfriends blood work that he is also a carrier for the spinal muscular atrophy gene. So since we are both carriers there is a 25% chance our baby will be born with this. We decided to go ahead and do the amniocentesis so we know she does or doesn't have it.

Has any one had this done before? I don't know what to expect :(

hi there - i am so sorry to hear that you got bad resluts on your bf blood work. are you asking about the amnio test? if so yes i have done amniocentesis with both my pregnancies. with my dd we did the sequential screening test and got low ratio so we opted for amnio the second time i didn't even care about the sequential screening as it only gives a ration and could be completly different in reality.

to be honest the actual procedure both times was very painless and not as bad as i had imagined it to be. but the waiting for the result was what was dreadful. i got the result for my current pregnancy and everything is ok. :)

where do you live? i read that in the USA there are other less invasive options now. panorama i believe it is called. they just draw blood from you instead of amniotic fluid. you should research that and ask your doc if that is an option for you....

i did my first amniocentesis test in the USA for my dd and this time i did the test here in sweden.

good luck and hoping that all is well with your baby.
