I am going to have one in July and I was just hoping to hear some stories about how the amnio went for you. I am open to hearing both good and bad stories.

My amnio went great. I went in fearing the worse. I am 28 weeks tomorrow :)
Why are you going for an amnio?

Thanks for letting me know your experience. I'm so scared of the risks involved. I'm having it to see if my baby has been infected with toxoplasmosis.. :(

I haven't been through it but I will be in July as well so I just wanted to say that I hope everything goes just fine with yours and send you hugs :hugs:

Going to be a traffic whore and just link to my blog post on it:

Amni-Oh-Noes!

Overall, it wasn't so bad. Good luck with yours.

I had one qith bad news! It only pinches for about 30 sec or less as the needle passes through the sac. The pain is no worse than shot , I thought. I did have to take a easy after though.

I just had my amnio today and it wasn't that bad.

I have a complete anterior placenta, but they still found a good-sized fluid pocket to draw from and didn't have to go through the placenta. The needle they use is a .22 gauge, which is the same as for a blood draw in your arm (actually smaller than the one they sometimes use!). The worst part was when the needle went through the uterine wall, it causes some cramping that was fairly uncomfortable. But that lasted maybe a minute, minute and a half, and then it was over. The nurse and doctor talked me through the whole thing and were super nice and calm throughout.

So try not to worry, the worrying about what it will be like was actually worse than the procedure itself :) I'm taking it easy on the couch for the rest of the day - I've had some mild cramping but no bleeding whatsoever.

Anyway, that was my experience, just thought I'd share.

glad you had a good experience!

The processitself wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. ITs uncomfortable but not extremely painful. They took the first draw but baby was being awkward and they didn't get a good sample so they had to reinsert the needle and go again. Horrible.

AAfterwards hubby walked me to the door of the hospital and went to get our car. I was sat in the waiting room and thought I was going to pass out. My vision was all blurry and flashing lights. I got off my seat and sat on the floor in case I passed out and fell. An old lady came and sat near me and chatted till I felt better and hubby came back. I was so sure I was gonna faint or puke. Probably more scary than the test cos hubby was away. /only thing that stopped me puking was drinking water so make sure u take a bottle with u. my test was in july too and it was roasting

Another question for you ladies who have been through this.. Will my husband be allowed in the room when this is being done? i REALLY hope so, I'm afraid to go through this alone. :(

I'm not sure where you are if the same rules apply but where I am, they definitely allow one person in the room. :hugs: [some allow more but mine only allows one]

I'm in Pennsylvania. I SO hope he can go in with me. :)

When in July will you be having yours? I go in on the 2nd. Less than a week away now...

I'm sure they will. If you can though, call ahead to double check so it can ease your mind a little in that regard. It will definitely be helpful knowing that your husband can be there to support you :hugs: We've decided to get a second opinion on ours. Our insurance changes on July 1st so the first week of July we will be going to a new Perinatal doctor to see what they say. If they still recommend the amnio, we'll get it asap.
I've talked with a few women at work who've had it done [all three of them had it 8+ years ago so I know that technology is better now] and they had good experiences, that made me feel a LOT better about the whole thing. They really said the worst part was waiting for it to happen. The actual event wasn't any more painful then a blood draw. Fingers crossed for you that it goes smoothly with as little pain as possible and the results come back that all is healthy with your little one :hugs:

I don't know if I'm more afraid of the amnio itself or the possible outcome of all of this.

Good luck with your new doctor, I hope all works out well for you. :hugs:

I could share my amnio experience but at this point it doesnt matter.
How did it go?

It went okay. I was so terrified going into it. I did have some severe cramping afterwards. My husband made me stay home from work today, I don't feel that I really needed to though.

TMonster, do you remember what color the amniotic fluid was? I didn't look, but asked my husband and he said it was a light yellowish color. Is that normal?

YesIt is yellow in color! Really do need to rest! One gal lost her baby after amnio so take care of yourself!

I was put on bed rest for 3 days after and on complete pelvic rest and lifting restriction for a week.

I know they took 2 vials of fluid and while I didn't look very carefully I think what I saw was clear but its plausible its a faintish yellow too, after all, its mostly fetal urine.
