Been alot of doggie threads lately, and i am in the general opinion that it takes ALOT to let a dog into you're home especially when you have a child, and i believe a dog should never be 100% trusted etc etc ... I don't hate dogs! i actually really like them! had a Lab/Doberman cross when i was a child...

Anyway!! .. my OH has said he/we should get a dog! ... ( a family pet)
Luke is only just two.. and he has his heart set on a Dalmatian..( not luke my OH )
From looking around on the net, I'm picking up VERY mixed information, one site will say they are the best dog i could have the next will say they are the worst! ... any advice from dalmatian owners would be amazing ... just you're general advice on living with a dalmatian...

Also i would rather get a poodle! haha ... so if anyone can think of why a poodle would make a better pet .. :winkwink:

what about a labradoodle?

Iv heard that poodles have a really grumpy snappy temprement

I had a look at them, seems like a good mix they are mutts tho aint they ? not that it matters...

Mutts? I dont know what that means.

we have a Labrador and i personally think its a great breed for familys, they usually have a easy going attitude.

My sister had a dalmatian, unfortunately she had to put it down as it kept snapping at the kids (12,14,16) I think the vet said something about it having a tumour on the brain and it was causing it to randomly go off on one!

I know this sounds very negative, 95% of the time he was lovely and it wasnt his fault. It was a case of being ill.

Make sure you get from a well bred family. Im sure they have to have certificates or something to say they are good breeders!? not quite sure! sorry this aint much help x

most dogs are muts tho.
dont have a clue what mines mixed with but she isnt 100% jack russle, her hair is too long and curly.

as u dont trust dogs 100% i just think u should go for the one who seems best suited to u lo, poodles have a bad rep but u cud fine a really nice one

i meant mongrel lol .. i think thats the right word... ? yeah i hear labs are the best family dogs :) its deffo one to consider its just getting my oh to not be SO set on the dalmatian not that it bothers me .. i would get the dalmatian if it was the best choice .. dno if im making any sense .. sorry !! x

I wouldnt get a dalmatian for first time owner but its up to you. I personally wouldnt get a labradoodle either but I am not a fan of the "fancy" mixed breed and long term health benefits.

I don't know anything about labradoodles really.. are they prone to problems ?! ... x :flower:

as long as both dogs have hip scores done i dont think they are any more prone to problems then any other dogs

My mum went for Miniature Schnauzers, which are hypo-allergenic, easy to train, companion dogs, loving, great with kids....they are the perfect breed for us, plus they dont require a massive amount of excersize. They don't yap, though they do say you can't just have one schnauzer lol as mum proved over xmas, when she went and got another pup lol.

They are a fantastic breed and I do reccomend them. However, google dog forums for proper advice on dogs as you can then get mixed reviews about almost every breed out there. (I don't know if I am allowed to say this but a family member of mine breeds dogs and she uses "discuss dogs". If I am not allowed to reccomend the dog forum please just edit my post, but I do reccomend the mini schnauzers)

We have a labrador and hes such a lovely dog and id recommend having a labrador. Ive also heard alot of people say there really good family dogs aswell

thank you Broody_Mama i just found that forum will ask there aswell :) nice to get there opinions also, only reason i posted here really, is because i'm sure people can understand that i want to do the best by LO :) and alot of people here will have dogs and kids etc ...

In my opinion its how the dog is brought up and its breeding that makes the difference. If you get a puppy from someone reputable and bring it up well then there shouldn't be any problems.

I know some dogs need more stimulation etc but i think the biting and bad behaviour comes from people not exercising and stimulating their dogs enough and also not training them properly.

As said above you get mixed reviews. Example is my mum has a terrier who bites but he was beaten as a puppy by previous owners. My uncle also has a terrier who he had from a pup which was good as gold. Never put a foot wrong.

No help with regards to a dalmation, but i highly reccomend a Boxer  We have a 3 year old Boxer girl and she is amazing with kids.. They are amazing dogs and i have never known anyone to have a bad one iykwim?! x

lol it seems there is not alot of dalmatian owners about :( ?

Used to have a Rotty (I know they have a bads reputation) called Ruby. She was such a docile and happy dog with DS, he was able to pull her ears, tail, nose, take her food bowl, take her chew toys etc and she just shrugged it off. Lovely breed if you find one with great breeding parents with good attitude and temperament!

My Uncle had a dalmation with 2 small children around and he was good as gold. My cousin is grown up and got his own family now and he got a dalmation a couple of weeks ago. He's got a one year old and another on the way and their dog is fine too.

Ive heard that dalmations are really energetic and need tons of walking etc and poodles are quite snappy- that was the reasons I didnt choose those breeds

xx

I grew up with dalmations:thumbup:
We had 2 girls and a male, the girls were amazing, very easy to train, obedient and very loving and gentle with kids.
The male tho was completely bonkers:wacko: He was hyper, even with massive amounts of exercise (we lived on a farm) and would eat walls:dohh: was great with bigger kids tho.

The best dog I have ever had is my little french bulldog, she was a bit slow on the house training but she is amazing with my kids:cloud9:

I will say with dallies, be prepared to walk/run them for miles every day, they will not do well without high levels of exercise:flower:
