I'm just wondering, how does it work with fees etc?

I'm looking into Orthodontic Therapy, I couldn't start until 2012 because I have to have been a qualified Dental Nurse for 12 months. The fees for the year is £12,900 which of course I don't have.

Hi doll, I did teacher training at uni but that was a few years ago. Have you tried contacting the university to see how their funding system works? It might be that even if it's not funded by anything (ie NHS/Student loans) that you can get a bursary or something. Good luck, that's pretty hefty for a year!!

I'm thinking of waiting, I will hopefully have a baby by then and I'm guessing I might get a bit more help?

I know it's one hefty fee!!! I think it's because there is a lot of money in it with it being specialised.

At least I can learn to drive before hand with it being so far away!

I'm a graduate, Law and Sociology. Would this be your first degree? Is it undergraduate? If yes to both, contact the student loans company, they may be able to help with loans/grants/etc. If not, I think you can't get anything from them, but don't quote me on it, I only know that my friend who has gone back to do a second undergrad degree is having to fund it himself.

You might be able to get a career development loan - a friend of mine got one for her postgrad law qualification a few years ago.

are you an undergraduate? what type of degree is it, ie Bsc (Hons), or a diploma etc?
you need to go to direct.gov.uk/studentfinance
then you will see the "finance for new students" section on the right hand side ish. select full time or part time student depending on what basis you're doing your course. if u scroll down there'll be an option to apply for your loan(s).

you fill in questions, and will be asked how much you need for tuition (£12,900). and also you can apply for maintenance loan, which is optional. can do this based on income or not if you wish. if your income is low then do it on the income based option, then you will get more. if your income is high dont do it income based, you can still just apply for the maximum amount but there will be no extra.
this is also quite useful (student finance calculator):
https://www.studentfinance.direct.gov.uk/calculator/studentfinancecalculator/

if your course is run by the nhs they often pay for part or all of the course - not just medicine, this covers dentistry, physiotherapy etc so might cover you as well, especially since it is an expensive course.
hope that helps. the cut off point for loan applications is usually about 31st may for guaranteed first week of september ish. having said that i did mine for this academic year in july.. and still got it 2nd week of september ish!
make sure no details are changing between now and next september, you'll need to give bank details at the end of the application.

good luck!
xxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for your help girls, I don't know a lot of information yet, I'm still looking into it.

With my start being 2012 I am going to wait because I might have a baby by then and who whos what my financial situation will be by then, I just wanted to get some information on it all before I jump in!

hiya if you live in scotland or unis in scotland you can try SAAS...if not i tihnk England has another company...they will pay your fees for uni and give you a bit extra (like a busary or loan).
I was (and am) still at uni and for if you have.are having a baby there they iffer you support with money and a creche.

KA92 they only pay in Scotland to people who have lived here for a number of years...sadly in England students have to pay their own fees but get loans...its run totally different to here. Also if you go to a uni like mine they do not have any where for you to leave children/babies :hissy:

Def check out the help you can get though...i know we get dependant grants which can be for your OH too??

Ohh thats stupid...SAAS are pretty rubbish though took my all this time to get a loan (since Aug)!! Sorry not very helpful :(

Yea i know SAAS have made a total f**k up this year :dohh:

I am lucky cause i am in scotland i get my tuition fees paid, but help with childcare has been crap. I got £90 a month and that only covers 1/5 of what my fees where but hey was my decision to go to uni so i shouldnt worry:thumbup: x

That's why I am trying to way things up, I know it sounds really daft but having kids to me is more important than my career so I have to make sure that when I have kids they won't suffer.

I have emailed my local Uni and asked them for help.

I'm having my children and going back after they are nearly in school...however i can only do that as my OH can still pay for 4 to go to private school etc otherwise i might change my plans  But it all depends on what you want out of life and for them :) When they are younger its easier though...i think ha ha ha!!

Urgh Uni is soo expensive! It's a while til I go but I feel so sorry for my parents... I don't qualify for any bursaries or grants at all because my dad earns over a certain amount, so I'll be reliant on loans :dohh:

Sorry that was no help!

Yea i know i wonder why Scotland can make it free though...?

Hope you don't mind me asking.....why are your kids going to private schools?

Cos i dont like the schools near by  Also my my OH and I both went to private schools so it seems a bit wrong not to at least give your children what you have..i mean you always set out to give them a better life than you had right? (least thats my thoughts) Also although i dont believe that you get a better education at a private school i think it sets different values...i didnt always go there i moved to one when my parents split up so i know the difference in schools around here. But my OH and i did say that if we lived in another place where the state schools were just the same it wouldnt bother us... please nobody shout at me :( I'm not saying it to offend people i just mean that i want to give my daughter the same oppertunities that i got...

it probably is different here.. i'm in the us, but i get lots of government funding and i got a lot of scholarships. for the year, my tuition costs $37,000 and i (my mom ) only paid about $2,000. needless to say, my mom was quite thrilled with me.

 Thats like my cousin at school she got 'academic' 'sports' and 'music' scholarships :dohh: Obviously she got all A* throughout school and now in cambridge...she got the brains in our family

Scotland is def better for free uni :)

i went to uni, (BA sociology and criminology) quite a few years ago now, and the fee's were stupid then! now they are just ridiculous! how on earth are people supposed to afford them! i would contact ucas to and see what they have to say hon.

lots of luck :flower:
